MISSION OF LGBHawaii
The Mission of the LGBHawaii is to be the "unifying thread" of Hawaii's LGBT and Gay Friendly Businesses and Community. The LGBHawaii strives to grow, promote, increase their visibility while providing a link between the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered community here in Hawaii and the businesses that support and respect this segment of the population. Many of the businesses in this organization are gay owned and operated or cater directly to this distinctive clientele. By providing members with educational and business development programs, marketing exposure and networking opportunities, we empower them to create, grow and retain business.

LETTER FROM THE EDITIOR Thank You Neil Abercrombie!
As I sit down to write my column for this issue of Kaleo I am still experiencing residual after-glow from last week's primary elections and want to relish in the victories. After all, it has been a rare novelty in recent months that we can actually say we have reason to celebrate. We have a good friend in Neil Abercrombie. He and his "partner", as they often refer to themselves in what seems to be a not-so discreet nod to the GLBT community, have supported progressive politics in Hawaii for decades.
The lessons are abundant. It seems the electorate rejected Mufi for his opportunist divisive campaign; trying to turn Asian against Haole, islander against mainlander, gay against straight, religious against secular, and on and on and on. We here in the Aloha State spoke loud. It is now safe to say that Mufi did not just lose. He was clobbered! The difference between this week and last week is 51,699 votes -- the Abercrombie-over-Hannemann margin of victory. Aloha!
While many of us are breathing a collective sigh of relief that Mufi is out of the running and subsequently out of the Mayor's Office too, we must remember that our work is not over. While Mufi was shameful in his endorsement for Gov. Lingle's cowardly decision to veto HB444 we have to remember that he is not in our sites any more. Now, we need to focus on Gov. Lingle's right hand man "Duke" Aiona. While Mufi is a bigot, Aiona is the Mayor of Bigotville and he needs to go down in flames like Mufi did. Need some inspiration? Follow this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we8bb5dBAXY&NR=1
United We Stand and divided we fall. Abercrombie deserves our full throttle support. He has earned it. In addition I would like to congratulate Brian Schatz for winning the primary to replace "Duke" Aiona as Lt. Gov. and congratulate our friend and ally Gary Hooser for a race well fought. He stood up for us even when it might have been politically convenient to remain silent and for this we should all never forget. Mahalo for reading, mahalo for voting and Aloha!

SPONSORS
Corporate and Foundation Giving LGBHawaii Seeking Sponsors!
Why brand with us?
At the LGBHawaii, we believe that sponsorship branding
should reach beyond annual fundraisers and instead provide ongoing and
constant opportunities that directly engage your target audience. We
recognize traditional business objectives to increase profits and look
to develop opportunities that result in positive returns on investment
for your company. Corporate sponsorship is fundamental to the success
of our fund-raising events and programs. The LGBHawaii is able to fulfill
its mission due in part to our corporate sponsors.

LOCAL BUSINESSES Kelli Bullock ~ Photographer
Hawaii is undoubtedly a beautiful and magnificent place, of
unparalleled natural beauty and gentle human spirit.
However, with recent veto of HBR444, we have been reminded
of the inequalities that face many of our residents in these isles of
Aloha. Until each citizen of Hawaii is
afforded the same rights to care for their partners and families, this natural
beauty and gentle human spirit is marred by the ugly scar of inequality. If we
deny one group the ability to care for their family, then we are hindering the
forward progress of society in general.
I am currently working on a personal photography project
under the current working title of "Ho'okahi: Love is Love"; the goal of this
project is to highlight members of our community, gay/lesbian couples and
families primarily, who are currently affected by the lack of civil union
legislation, and would have greatly benefited by the passing of HB444. My
concept is two-fold: one: to demonstrate that families are not defined by
heterosexuality and religion, but defined by love, compassion and
responsibility. And two: the beauty of Hawaii is magnified when all families
and lovers are treated equally. The Hawaiian word "ho'okahi" means to unite, or
bring together as one.
If you would like to be included in my photography project, or
have any other photography needs, please contact me at www.kellibullockphotography.com,
kellibullock808@gmail.com, or
808-387-5224.
I am very honored to be a featured artist at the LGBH Event 1st Anniversary/Launch Celebration on October 16, 2010. I will have an image from my latest
"Love is Love" session on display, as well as other photographs of "gay" life
in Hawaii.
Photo features married couple Chris Frendreis and Will Coleman of Honolulu.

AMERICAblog Gay:
Eugene Robinson slays Bishop Eddie Long
Posted by
Timothy Beauchamp
at
9/28/2010 08:23:00 AM
This has to be the finest piece written, yet, since the Bishop Eddie Long scandal has broken.
In
2004, Long led a march to Martin Luther King Jr.'s grave site in
support of a Georgia constitutional amendment banning same-sex
marriage. Two years later, when it was decided that Coretta Scott
King's funeral would be held at New Birth -- the Kings' daughter
Bernice is one of the ministers there -- veteran civil rights activist
Julian Bond was outraged. "I knew her attitude toward gay and lesbian
rights," he said of Coretta Scott King. "I just couldn't imagine that
she'd want to be in that church with a minister who was a raving
homophobe."
The black church in America has long mixed political
activism with a deep social conservatism. But while polls show that the
nation has become much more understanding and tolerant of
homosexuality, the black church has been painfully slow to change. I
wrote a column several years ago suggesting that black preachers come
down from the pulpit and get to know their parishioners -- and I still
think that would be a good start.Robinson goes on to hit
every note sans maybe the admonition we should expect our political
leaders to observe and keep homophobia from the pulpit from
infiltrating and influencing public policy. Bishop Eddie Long, whether
proven guilty or not of allegations, but certainly culpable of
repulsive homophobia, is a fine reason for the continued separation of
church and state.
