Dear Fellow Patriots,
I rarely use this newsletter to vent, but I am afraid I might explode if I don't get some things off my chest.
One of the small pleasures in life I enjoy is sitting down for breakfast with a cup of good hot coffee and the newspaper. I have a rotation of restaurants I visit and I enjoy the "quiet time." Usually. But not this morning.
Instead of going to the comics first, I made the mistake of reading the article the front page of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. The particular story of dismay was entitled "GOP will Shelve Bid to Retool Medicare."
Here are some items in the article:
Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., and chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, said that while he still supported the party's Medicare approach, opposition from Democrats made it pointless to proceed.
"The reality is this president has excoriated our budget plan and the Medicare proposal in the plan," Cantor told reporters.
While Cantor outlined the House-passed Ryan budget as Republicans' opening bid in the Blair House negotiations, he said little about the Medicare proposals, participants said. "He didn't need to talk about it in that room," said one participant. "Everyone knows it's dead."
OK, enough is enough! That is all I can take. You can read the article yourself.
My question is, when it gets right down to the nitty-gritty, what is the difference between a Republican and a Democrat? The answer: apparently nothing of any real significance. They talk a good talk, but they don't produce. I can understand having the ball in your hand, running around defenders, cutting back and forth to evade tackles headed to the goal line nearly 100 years away and then finally getting gang tackled before you reach the end zone. What I don't understand is looking down field, believing there no way you can make it and then handing the ball to the opponent. That I just do not understand.
Is there no true believer in the Republican leadership who has the intestinal fortitude to even try to present an idea to the American people? Of course Obama was not going to like it. Of course the Democrats were not going to want to vote for it. But don't assume the American people are so woefully ignorant and self serving that they can't understand the realities of our condition and accept real and logical and workable solutions. To not even try to make your case is insane.
Without trying to tackle the Medicare/healthcare and Social Security issues, there is little benefit in doing much else. Why waste time patching holes in the deck and painting the hand rails when there is a huge hole below the waterline and the ship is going to sink anyway?
If it is true, as the article said, that house members got an earful from their constituents in townhall meetings and that is what changed their minds, then we are not doing our job of taking our country back. I would dare say that most of you people reading this venting are among the most affected by the Medicare and Social Security debates. We must craft and deliver a message to our representatives that they cannot misunderstand or ignore.
I for one have no intention of voting for any Republican (Vern Buchanan are you listening?) who does not stand up and fight this turning away from the Medicare debate in this budget. I am not interested in having a politician represent me, I am interested in a person representing me who can effectively express the principles that made America great. I want someone who would make George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and the rest of us proud.
Giving up without a fight is a sure way to defeat and a sure way to prove that you are not a true believer.
Thanks for letting me vent; however, I don't feel better yet. See you tomorrow at the Classic Car Rally on Dearborn.
