Our national debt stands at over 14 trillion and that doesn't include shortfalls fo Socal Security or Medicare. Last year's GDP ( gross domestic product or total taxable amount of goods and servces produced or sold within the United States ) was between 14 and 15 trillion dollars, thus we would have to tax a whole year's worth of GDP at 100% to pay off the national debt which obviously we can't. The federal government recieved revenues of approximately 2.1 trillion a year for the last 2 years while they ran up additional deficits of over a trillion a year. We are borrowing 43 cents for very dollar we spend.
Last year alone the interest on our national debt was 414 billion and by
2015 it could easily reach a trillion a year if the government continues deficit spendng and there is little or no growth in our GDP. As we watch the debates in the Senate over whether to cut 61 billion or 6-10 billion in spending, let's keep in mind that figure of 414 billion. Anything less than 414 billion in spending cuts is comparable to trying to refill your car's leaking radiator with a thimble while it continues to leak a gallon a minute. Unless Congress stops the deficit spending, it can be said we are borrowing money to pay the interest on our debt and that should alarm every American.
As for Charlotte County watchdog news, the biggest item is that the Placida Rd. extension and widening is still on although when construction would begin is unclear. The work could become mired in a lawsuit brought by some Placida and Rotonda folks who are against it. On the Florida state scene, the high speed Tampa-Orlando project was derailed by a court judgement which threw out the lawsuit brought by some Florida legislators. Another government boondoogle avoided thank goodness. The last paragraph and the part which I'm forwarding, is perhaps the most important thing happening on the national scene besides the battles in Wisconsin and other states over government wages and benefits. These continuing debates in the Senate and the House over budgets could well decide whether the United States survives financially. With the increases in oil and gasoline prices we continue to send our wealth abroad rather than drill for domestic sources.
