"Mindful Movement" and Training with an Edge
"Training with this equipment is fun, and a great way to enhance movement, coordination, muscular strength and endurance," says John Ditter, co-founder of Foundational Fitness and proponent of the "functional fitness" approach. Schools across the U.S. have discovered the value of this approach to training and physical education--encouraging students to take ownership for their own progress. For John Baker, PE instructor at Hanawalt Elementary School in Des Moines, Iowa, training and physical education is all about movement-- but not just any movement. "We're training students in mindful | | John Baker, PE Instructor, Hanawalt Elementary School |
movement," Baker explains. "We want them to think about how you move properly to get the maximum benefit." This principle forms the foundation of a PE program that emphasizes students taking ownership of their own fitness, along with quality assessment and physical activity beyond the gym. And Foundational Fitness equipment plays a big part in the program Baker directs. "I love the quality of the [Foundational Fitness] equipment," says Baker. "It's really practical, and not expensive." Training with an Edge Baker also uses Foundational Fitness equipment to train a former student, now a sophomore at Creighton University, and playing basketball there. "While training a Division One athlete for increased endurance and strength, I feel the Foundational Fitness equipment has helped her develop more completely in all three planes of movement. This form of training gives her an edge, because the approach isn't replicated in traditional training methods. The movements replicate the sport itself." Read the entire article.
