2011 PEP Funding Approved!
Despite federal budget cuts that threatened the continuation of the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP), the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) announces that the PEP program remains alive and well. On May 16, the U.S. Department of Education announced that PEP will receive $78,842,000 in funding for Fiscal Year 2011 -- just 0.2% less than the federal government approved in FY 2010.
Watch the Department of Education website for further information regarding this year's PEP grant.

Making the Connection
Philadelphia Students Learn Fitness for a Lifetime
 | | Bettyann Creighton, director of Health, Safety & Physical Education, Philadelphia SD. |
"I'm very big on helping kids get connected - to school, to church, to adults who can guide them," says Bettyann Creighton, director of Health, Safety and Physical Education for the Philadelphia school district.
"We want to spark their interest in some kind of activity, something that will 'turn them on'!" This focus has motivated several exciting initiatives in the Philadelphia school district - in partnership with InnerLink and with PEP grant funding -- all in an effort to help students get turned on to eating healthier foods, exercising more, controlling their weight and becoming more health conscious.
In early 2009, the district began implementing InnerLink's web-based Health eTools for Schools, provided through the district's health insurer, Independence Blue Cross. Health eTools supports school nurses, teachers, administrators and parents in efforts to reduce student obesity and encourage young people to adopt healthy lifestyles. "By helping kids become healthier, we not only create more productive learners today, but also help children grow into adults with fewer health risks," says Creighton.
"Health eTools also supports the district's Wellness Policy, which reinforces its commitment to the health of school communities so that students are fit, healthy and ready to learn." Read more.
