On June 25, Chair of the Agriculture Committee Rep. William Straus, Commissioner of Agriculture Scott Soares, and I visited Cavicchio Greenhouses in Sudbury to get an up-front view of the issues affecting local agriculture. Cavicchio is one of the largest plant wholesalers in the state and employs hundreds of residents. This family-owned greenhouses and nursery has grown tremendously under the leadership of Paul Cavicchio, a second generation owner.

The facility was a great example of how environmentally friendly management is good for the earth and good for business. The greenhouses are heated almost entirely by wood-fired boilers fed with recycled garden waste and stumps left by landscapers. Plants are watered with flooded floors to minimize water loss to evaporation; all water not absorbed by the plants is recycled.

The first step in supporting local agriculture is getting a good understanding of the industry and its needs. The visit to Cavicchio Greenhouses was a great chance to experience how new technology is supporting one of our Commonwealth's most historic industries.
