Also, we are told that in 2012 there will be an increase in sunspot activity, strongly influencing the energetic configuration of our planet. Then there's the suggestion of breaches in the earth's magnetic field, which could lead to a reversal of the magnetic poles.  Other projections speak to 2012 as a time when our planet will align directly with the sun and the center of our galaxy, an event supposedly taking place only once every 25,800 years.  There is likelihood, it is said, that the earth will spin wildly off its 23 1/2 degree tilt off center and roll over, causing world wide volcanic eruptions and massive changes in the structure of our oceans, destroying all life as we know it.  This could be scary stuff, except scientists tell us, for example, this alignment already took place in 1998.  Further, many of these physical elements have been cyclical, have ebbed and flowed through the centuries, and they still do.  We could not stop any of them then, and we surely cannot now. 

When tying the ending of the Mayan Calendar to the destruction of our planet in 2012, I am tempted to ask only, "So?" If we look at the endless prophecies that have predicted the end of our planet at a given time and in certain ways, we readily see that not a single one has come true. Here we are, still.  Could it be this record of prophetic failure on the physical plane speaks to the end of life on another dimension--the more superficial levels of consciousness from which we often draw life?
