Weekly Gatherings Sunday, June 20, 2010: Joseph Tuckerman Service Leader: Sarah Snow Joseph Tuckerman was a Unitarian minister who was way ahead of his time. He worked with the poor, alcoholics, prisoners, etc., from 1826 - 1839. Tuckerman's simple beliefs give us a framework for making the right choices. Religious organizations, such as our church, have tools to make those choices a reality. Sunday, June 27, 2010: What's Hot, What's Not Rev. Kimi Riegel A report from General Assembly. Every year Unitarian Universalists from around the continent gather in June. This year we will be in St Paul, Minnesota. One of the big topics this year will be whether to hold our Assembly in 2012 in Arizona. Is it better to go to Arizona and protest the oppressive laws or is it better to send a message by withdrawing our support of the state entirely? What do you think? Sunday, July 4, 2010: Freedom Service Leaders: Linda Gobeski, Dave Ewick and Diana Kohler
Join us for readings on the meaning of 'freedom.' |
 Kimi's Column
Social Justice is the center of our faith. Working for justice is how we walk our talk. We have begun the process of rejuvenating the social responsibility committee at Northwest. We will be walking our talk more than ever in the coming year.
On June 14 a group of Northwesters got together and began to set the priorities for the coming year. We talked about Economic Justice and Democracy. We want a Sustainable Future and Peace around the globe. We see a need for more work on diversity of all kinds; political, sexual, gender, religious, ethnic and racial. We discussed local gardens, recycling, St. Leos and much more.
We evaluated what we have done, what needs to be done and what we can do.
Two overarching themes emerged; Economic Justice and Diversity. There is acknowledgement that any one area of concentration will touch many others. Its hard to talk about Economic Justice without considering Global Warming. Diversity involves so many people and opportunities that it could be easy to feel overwhelmed.
In the end we have this list:
-- Bridgette Green, Peg Collins and I want to work on issues of diversity in our congregation. -- Mark Williams, Dan Walker and Tetshin Liddy want to support local gardens. -- Ray Keeling, Dan Walker, Sherry ??? and Chrissie King want to help us become more knowledgeable about the issues. -- Hillary Walker will be looking into opportunities for us to help out in Detroit. -- Randy Block will be developing specific ways we can be strong advocates for the LGBT community.
You will be hearing more from each of these task forces. Are you interested in one of these? Please give the organizers a call. Namaste |
