Business Spotlight: Yarns Unlimited
By Mary Ann Gingles, owner and guardian of Yarns Unlimited
Hello, everyone. I'm Mary Ann Gingles, the current "owner" of Yarns Unlimited.
I'm not fond of the word "owner" unless it's referring to something material. I never refer to myself as the owner of my beloved dogs, I'm their guardian, and I feel the same way about Yarns Unlimited, I am its guardian or steward at the present time.
The two previous stewards, Betsy Blumenthal and Suzanne Halvorson, both weavers, nurtured the shop lovingly. Betsy , who now lives in Colorado, continues to be a friend to the shop and we're still in touch with her; Suzanne, who lives locally, is still very much a part of the shop and is the leading weaving instructor. They both worked hard to ensure that the business is sustained to serve the fiber crafts community. Like them, I'm committed to continuing this legacy. I'm also committed to having weaving be a vital component of the shop. Though I've dabbled with weaving a bit on my rigid heddle loom, I am primarily a knitter and secondarily, a crocheter. I'm thrilled that Yarns is not just another knitting shop. Yarns is fortunate to count among its staff and instructors experts and masters in the field of weaving, spinning, knitting, crocheting, dyeing, felting and more. It's a place where creative ideas are exchanged, talents are shared, and lasting friendships, made.
Read more here.
Come see the new space for yourself during their grand opening and 32nd birthday celebration from Sept. 2-4, 10am-6pm on Fri/Sat. and 11-4 pm on Sunday.

| Bloomington Playwrights Project Announces 2011/2012 Season!
Subscriptions on sale now-Receive 5 tickets for the price of 4!
$72 Gen. Admission,
$60 Student/Senior
The Bloomington Playwrights Project - the only professional theatre in the entire state of Indiana focused solely on new plays - announces its 2011/2012 Season, which will feature five phenomenal new shows in its Mainstage Series and a distinctive selection of special events, proving this local treasure is indeed unique to the world. A Peek:
Bomb Shell Sept. 30-Oct. 15 These eight ten-minute plays will center on the theme of War & Peace, while ranging from the absurdly hysterical, poignantly dramatic, and even sweet... you'll find yourself laughing just as much as you're thinking. The BPP commissioned a number of writers to write new plays for this show, including Academy Award Nominee Jesse Eisenberg and Three-time Golden Globe Nominee Jeff Daniels.
I Am Grock by Amanda Rogers, winner of the 11/12 Reva Shiner Comedy Award, Dec. 2-17Therapist Phoebe Broman lands the interview of a lifetime promoting her new book, Brutal Honesty. Trouble is, her own insanely dysfunctional family arrives unexpectedly one hour before the interview. Her reputation and career at stake, Phoebe goes guerilla, holding her family hostage at gunpoint and demanding absolute honesty. In a surreal group "therapy" session filled with mimes, revelations about grandma's sex life, and genetically engineered super-children, Phoebe learns that although the truth might set you free, it can be one wild and crazy ride getting there.
The Boy in the Bathroom, a New Musical Feb. 3-18 David lives in his bathroom. He never comes out, at least not for the past year. David has obsessive-compulsive disorder and he's not going anywhere... until he meets Julie, and discovers that there might be something - or someone - on the other side of the door that will make it worth opening.
Three Views of the Same Object by Henry Murray Apr. 6-21, 2012 Three Views of the Same Object touchingly tells the story of an elderly couple with a suicide pact... their agreement to end it all "before they lose control of their lives." How do you know when the right moment presents itself? What if one is ready to go and the other isn't. Multiple actors portray the same husband and wife as we see three simultaneous views of how this pact will play out.
To Die For May 18-June 2 To Die For is a powerful pulp satire about an ambitious small town girl, Suzanne Stone, who's seduction by a fame-obsessed culture that defines our need "to be known" drives her to commit a carnal crime that captures the imagination of the world and changes the lives of those around her forever. |

Buy Local Program for State Agencies Good for Local Economies
By Una Winterman, Director, Local First Indiana
A recent change in Indiana state law enables state agencies to favor companies that employ local citizens and contribute to local economies.
It is called the "Buy Local Program," though it doesn't necessarily limit state agencies to contracts with local businesses. The formula was recently changed with the attempt to give Indiana businesses a competitive edge over out-of-state companies for state contracts and purchases. This change has great potential, not only to give local, independent businesses an edge, but also to encourage businesses to consider the impact on the local economy in which they operate. Upland Brewing Company is Expanding!
Upland has acquired a 47,000 square foot building in McDoel Gardens Neighborhood, near downtown Bloomington, and has begun applying for regulatory approval to re-located its production brewery to the new site by January 2012. The new location sits at the corner of Grimes and Morton, just south of the new pedestrian bridge on the new leg of the B-Line Trail. Their new investments will allow them to more than double their brewing capacity. The company is also prepared to increase and accelerate its investment to beautify the building and site and is seeking economic development assistance from the City for infrastructure costs required for basic brewery operations in order to do so.
