The Chile Woman Farm Hit by Tornado
| | "Chile Woman" Susan Welsand surveys the downed tree blocking her front door. |
The Chile Woman Farm was hit by the tornado that came through earlier in the month. Aside from a few missing chickens, some major cleanup, and some damage to her greenhouse, all are okay. Susan asks for patience from her customers, as her email filled up during the power outage and while they were doing the major cleanup needed to get the farm back into shape. She was back in business and filling orders within days of the storm, but because it is the busiest time of the year, things are moving a bit more slowly than in years past. Show her your love next time you see her at the market! Click here to see photos of the damage. |
LFI Staff (and Friends) Back from the BALLE Conference
We recently got a chance to go to the Conference for the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE), an organization that connects groups like Local First Indiana all across the country to each other as well as funders, groups focused on sustainability issues and creative economic development strategies that keep more money circulating in individual cities. BALLE is North America's fastest growing network of socially responsible businesses, comprised of over 80 community networks representing 22,000 independent business members across 30 U.S. States and Canadian provinces (and one in France!). BALLE networks create local living economies through the building blocks of independent retail, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, green building, local zero-waste manufacturing, community capital, independent media, and local arts and culture.
We were lucky enough to bring a total of 8 people with us, some from the LFI staff and Steering Committee, and some interested folks from the community. It was an inspiring and fun couple of days. Here is a sampling of what we experienced:
