Free Ride for Big Online Retailers Should End
As a small, independent bookstore, The Friends of Art Bookshop as well as hundreds of other independe
nt retailers would like a level playing field when it comes to competing with massive online retailers.
Currently, online retailers like Amazon.com and Overstock.com are not collecting sales tax for items sold to Indiana residents, giving them a large competitive advantage over retailers that do. Existing sales tax laws in the 45 states that collect sales tax stipulate that when a company has a physical presence in the state (called "nexus")-through a retail store, warehouse, office, or sales agent-the company must collect and remit sales tax on purchases made by customers in those states. Dodging state tax laws creates an uneven playing field because many in-state customers will take advantage of tax-free, online shopping. Read more

The Deal that Indiana Made with Amazon
update on the previouse story by Marci Hughes
by Una Winterman, Local First Indiana
Two years ago, Amazon decided to expand their warehouses in Indiana. They promised more jobs and for this promise, requested, and were granted, a tax abatement. They wouldn't have to pay taxes on goods in the warehouses or the online sales made by Amazon affiliates. Brick and mortar businesses say Indiana's refusal to collect sales tax from online retailers is not only unfair but hurts all state residents.
The 7% sales tax required to be collected by brick and mortar retail in Indiana has led American Booksellers Association CEO Oren Teicher to call this the "7% Competitive Disadvantage" for local business. If local businesses were able to offer a 7% discount or choose to pocket the 7% windfall, they could have quite an advantage as well. Or we can level the playing field and take that unfair advantage away from an obviously thriving company like Amazon and see up to $217 million in revenue for the state of Indiana for 2012. Bloomington Playwrights Project: The Future of Arts Fair on the Square
June 18, 2011
10am - 6pm
Monroe County Courthouse
www.artsfair.org
The Bloomington Playwrights Project (BPP), a local nonprofit professional theatre company, took over the coordination and administration of Arts Fair on the Square this year after the Bloomington Area Arts Council recently announced it was no longer going to manage the event.
In order to attain the high quality the BPP expects of itself, they have been consulting with representatives from the Fourth Street Festival to best learn what improvements need to be made. A greater effort to reach more artists through publications along with a strong jury will help to ensure the presence of top-level art at the event.
The BPP is also seeking to improve attendance by significantly increasing the event's marketing budget and maximizing cross-promotion with Taste of Bloomington, another exciting annual event running concurrently with Arts Fair in downtown Bloomington. The BPP has already made plans to collaborate with Taste of Bloomington on the purchase of multiple billboards, newspaper advertisements, feature stories, announcements in national arts magazines, regional target-marketing and yard signs. The BPP has also redesigned a new home for Arts Fair on the web at artsfair.org. |
