Newsletter October 2010    Serving Bloomington and Monroe County

Thank you to all who participated in Going Local Week and to all who got out and tried to do something local every day.  The news is good in Bloomington.  More and more people understand the importance of eating and shopping local.  A recent Herald Times story showed a record-setting jump in attendance at the Farmer's Market this year.  Customer attendance is up 41% from the same time last year.  No doubt that this is because people are beginning to understand the importance of knowing where your food comes from and what shopping locally can do for the local economy.

As ever, there are a lot of exciting events this October.  Look below and find some fun things to do this month in our local, independent businesses.  Our Mixer is back, look below for details.

Local First Indiana has Joined BALLE! BALLE logo

We are proud and excited to announce that we have joined the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies and have become the first Hoosier BALLE (pronounced bah-lee) network!

We first found BALLE when we were doing the preliminary research for creating Local First Indiana.  We found ourselves wandering over to the BALLE website daily to answer our many questions.  BALLE does an excellent job of showing, through research and studies, how the work of local independent business supports the economy of the cities they are rooted in.

Many of you remember that we brought Michelle Long, the Executive Director of BALLE, to speak to a crowd of over 100 business owners and community leaders last November when we launched Local First Indiana.  She talked about the importance of the work that local business owners do for our economy, every day that they show up to work.  This presentation hit home with many.

What is BALLE?

BALLE consists of over 80 other networks made up of over 22,000 local businesses and is the fastest growing network of socially-responsible businesses in North America. BALLE's mission is "catalyze, strengthen and connect networks of locally owned independent businesses dedicated to building strong Local Living Economies." BALLE members networks are not chapters or franchises, but are independent member networks that are joining together to learn from each other, share experiences and expertise, and form a strong learning community.  BALLE takes an inclusive, positive, solution-oriented approach to community development.  BALLE networks integrate across all sectors of the economy-from retail, food, and services businesses to nonprofits, manufacturing, banking.

See BALLE's website to read more about their Mission, Vision, and Principles.

Or watch a video of BALLE Board Member Sandy Wiggins discussing these: http://vimeo.com/13715333

Why did Local First Indiana Join BALLE?

We joined BALLE to benefit from the combined experience and expertise of 80 other networks like ours with over 22,000 business members. Local and state governments have lauded BALLE networks, like Sustainable Connections in Bellingham, Washington, the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia, and Local First Arizona as key partners in local economic development and sustainability. Most importantly, BALLE offers a connection to these peers across North America.   BALLE also offers guidance on various topics through workshops, manuals, synthesizing research, consulting, webinars, and an annual conference.  We hope that being plugged into the resources and community of BALLE will make our jobs easier and have a greater impact on our community.  Through BALLE, we'll be able to share our successes with other communities.

Thanks for Participating in Going Local Week!
Organized by Local First Indiana, Local Growers Guild and Bloomington Independent Restaurant Association, Going Local Week (Sept. 3-11) was a multi-location, multi-venue event celebrating local food, local goods and local businesses.

Going Local Week hosted 22 events in 40 different local and regional businesses, involving over 30 artists and 15 local and regional farms.  Local First Indiana worked with the Local Growers Guild and the Bloomington Independent Restaurant Assn. to gather all of our members together and work on a week of celebration for all things local.  Events included art openings, concerts, business specials, local food specials in restaurants, a Chef's Challenge, various fundraisers for other local nonprofits, two runs, walks, and dance events.

We took a survey of participants at Sustain IU Day, the opening celebration for IU's Themester on Sustainability.  The results of the top five favorite local, independent restaurants for these participants are:

1.  Laughing Planet
2.  Upland Brewery

4.  Mother Bear's Pizza
5.  FARMbloomington

Winners of the Raffle Card:

Wandering Turtle's Dia de los Muertos Community Altar

by Michael Redman, Jaime Sweany

& Community Members

October 14 - 31

Closing Reception:

The Lighting of our Completed 2010 Dia de los Muertos Community Altar, October 29, 5:00 - 8:00 PM

With Special Reception Music by TBA

In the tradition of Dia de los Muertos, Wandering Turtle invites community members to add gifts to our altar in honor of their deceased loved ones over the course of the exhibit. During the closing reception we will light the candles on the altar for the festive occasion of Dia de los Muertos. During this Mexican holiday, (traditionally November 1 & 2nd)  it is customary to leave those who have preceded us in death small offerings of items they would have enjoyed during their lifetime; thus nurturing the memory of their lives and letting them know they have not been forgotten and remain a part of our lives today.

Once More with Fire Breshaun Once More with Fire

Oct. 15&16 at 8pm
Rose Firebay in the Waldron Arts Ctr., 122 S. Walnut St.
$12
Tix avail. at Buskirk Chumley Box Office

Once More With Fire is a one woman theatre performance written by Breshaun Joyner.

One woman's journey to explore the reason and relevance of life's surreal and tragic events while trying to live authentically and manifest joy and resilience. She seeks to define and declare who she is to herself and the world despite the constant onslaught of competing alternative and erroneous identities assailed from the zeitgeist, past, prese...
nt, and future. Through rich and provocative storytelling Once More with Fire presents a raw, comical, and sometimes dark trip to where life can take us. Most importantly it resonates with people of all backgrounds that it is possible to figure a way out of the maelstrom intact and whole and stronger than ever before.

A reception follows the Oct. 15 performance. Tickets are $12 and available at the BCT Box Office (812) 323-3020 . A portion of the proceeds will benefit Local First Indiana!
