Hello from Local First Indiana!
We are very excited to tell you about our plans for September! We have joined forces with other like-minded organizations in Bloomington to bring you Going Local Week, a weeklong celebration of all things local. See below for details.
Aside from bringing attention to local business and what it does for the community, one of the main driving forces behind what we do is focus on the sense of connection between the people, the many organizations, the businesses, and the government in Bloomington and Monroe County. Our first Going Local Week is a chance to connect all of those dots in a way that hasn't quite happened yet. Many of us care about being able to source our products locally, and many of us are actually working towards those goals. Going Local Week offers us a chance to work together on this very important mission, and celebrate while we are at it. Looking forward to seeing you all out that week.

Celebrate Your Independents!
Thank you to everyone who came to our event at Oliver Winery!
The weather was a bit stormy, which gave us a chance to come inside and enjoy the air conditioned tasting room, where DJ Junebug Jenkins provided the perfect atmosphere with his tunes. We had a great spread from Bloomingfoods, A Moveable Feast, and two brand new entrepreneurs from the Bloomington Kitchen Incubator. Katherine Forgacs brought some yummy gluten free key lime cupcakes, and the undeniable star of the evening, Jeff Wuslich's "Jefflato" (gelato) was the perfect cold snack on a hot night. I highly recommend the Nutella flavor, though there were some serious votes for the peanut butter flavor as well. Jefflato quickly gained the attention of the folks from Bloomingfoods, who look forward to selling the peanut butter flavor (made with Bloomingfoods peanut butter!) at Lotus Fest. We had a great time, met some great new friends (see below in the members section!!) and give a hearty thanks to everyone who helped make it a fun night.
*Thank you to Patrick Siney Art Direction and Design for creating a great invitation and graphic for our event. Find his website here.

Victoria Wesseler's Going Local Week
Sept. 5-11, 2010
After coming across Victoria Wesseler's blog about Going Local, we were inspired to join forces with like-minded organizations in Bloomington to celebrate a Going Local Week of our own.
In her blog, she urges folks to "try one Indiana local food at each meal." She launched the blog in September 2007, after taking early retirement from a business ethics and regulatory compliance consulting business that she founded and ran for twelve years, she wanted to do something totally different with the next phase of her life. "Something that combined my love for gardening, food preservation, and cooking and helping people be successful in those pursuits. My friends kept telling me that they loved my homemade food, recipes, and gardening tips and that I should find a way to share that information on a larger scale."
The first "Going Local Week" was held a year later in September 2008. There is no one single event surrounding Going Local Week. Through her blog, Victoria urges people to try some new things during this week, such as:
- Visit a farm, farm market, or farmers' market in your area.
- Switch one of your pantry or refrigerator staples, such as dairy products or eggs to one from a local producer.
- When dining out, choose restaurants who support our local producers by offering local food items on their menus or in their dishes.
Host a local foods pitch-in and ask everyone to bring a dish made primarily with local foods.
- Bring in fresh Indiana melons for the staff instead of doughnuts
- Have an in-office potluck lunch where everyone brings in something they've made with a local ingredient.
- Go out to an after-work "happy hour" at a local winery if there is one close by.
- Take turns bringing a local dish to share at lunch with work buddies.
- Preserve some fruits or vegetables for winter use.
2009's Going Local Week found events happening across Indiana. From a Chef's Challenge and a special coffee flavored with Indiana-made Shagbark Hickory Syrup in Indianapolis, to an 8 week garden program in Mt. Vernon, IN that teaches kids to garden and introduces them to fresh food that they have grown themselves. The Purdue Extension office in Tipton, IN had a similar program, and the libraries in Linton and Kendallville offered a local foods pitch-in and a cooking contest.
Going Local Week continues to grow across Indiana, and Bloomington is welcoming the idea whole-heartedly. Timed well for harvest, returning students, and families settling back into their school routines, Going Local Week in Bloomington looks like it will be quite a success.

Momma's Goat Cheese Appetizer
From Victoria Wesseler's Blog, Going Local
(see story above)
I originally was going to name this recipe "When Judy Met Erin" in honor of the two Indiana Artisans who inspired me to create it--Judy Schad (www.capriolegoatcheese.com) and Erin Edds (www.HoosierMomma.com). Based loosely on a tapas that I enjoyed a while back at a Chicago Spanish restaurant, this is labeled as an appetizer but it can easily become a light summer meal with the addition of a crisp green salad and a glass of Indiana wine. --Victoria
1/2 cup Hoosier Momma Bloody Mary Maker (www.Hoosier Momma.com)
2 tablespoons Indiana honey 3 ounces of plain Capriole Farms goat cheese (www.capriolegoatcheese.com)
Four 1 inch slices of crusty bread, toasted
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Line a small baking sheet with foil. Place two half cup oven safe ramekins on the foil lined baking sheet. |
