Hello from Local First Indiana!
Summertime in Bloomington is so lovely. The Fourth of July Parade is done, but we still have some celebrating to do! We'll be Celebrating our Independents out at Oliver Winery with a gathering on the terrace at Oliver Winery. This event is a big thank-you to our Local First Indiana members, but we invite other local, independent businesses to come and check us out as well. See below for more information. If you are out travelling this summer, remember to shop locally while you are out of town, too. You will have unforgettable experiences and your tourism money counts to improve the places you visit. Look for local specials here in town, too, and enjoy a crowd-free Bloomington while it lasts! We are working with the Local Grower's Guild to plan a Going Local Week for September 3-11. If you are considering becoming a member, this would be a great time to take the plunge. The more businesses who get involved, the more successful the initiative will be! We are asking local, independent businesses to use this week to highlight their wares, work together with other local, independent businesses to host tastings, and to bring more locally grown food into restaurants. We will publicize all events happening this week and back it up with a few events of our own. For more information, please contact me at info@localfirstindiana.org. Check out www.goinglocal-info.com to see the larger statewide effort that is focused on the same week.
Have a great month, and hope to see you out at Oliver Winery on the 15th!

Celebrate Your Independents! Oliver Winery July 15, 2010 6:30-8:30 p.m.
A Member Reception, to thank our Founding Members, at Oliver Winery on the terrace. Music from D.J. Junebug Jenkins, and food from Bloomingfoods, A Moveable Feast, Crazy Horse, and others. This event is open to Local First Indiana members and the owners and leaders of local, independent businesses in Bloomington and Monroe County.
Local, independent business carries the economy of Bloomington and Monroe County. This is a very important role to play and we believe that the folks who have taken a leap of faith and invested so much of their livelihoods and future into our community deserve extra support as well as celebration. Oliver Winery, one of Bloomington's oldest and strongest local businesses, serves as the perfect setting, and provides a great model for what is possible in our community, whether you are looking at the way they treat their workers or the careful business model they adhere to. Thanks to Oliver Winery for hosting this fun party for us.

This recipe has become a standard for our family. I can no longer eat hot dogs without this slaw piled high on top. Makes for a great potluck item. Tastes equally great on top of hot dogs as it does on top of a pile of buckwheat noodles. Obviously, you can also alter this recipe quite a bit, adding Napa cabbage, red peppers, etc. The addition of mayo is also quite lovely.
Sauce: 1 cup rice vinegar (heat on stove and add 3-4 T. sugar and a pinch of salt until sugar dissolves.) Cool in fridge. Add 1 T. hot chile paste (optional) 1 small head purple cabbage, sliced very thin (can use food processor for quick results) ¾ lb. grated carrots 5-6 sliced green onions 1 small bunch cilantro, chopped 1 small red onion, diced 1 cup raisins 1 cup chopped peanuts (optional) Mix ingredients in a bowl and pour cooled sauce over. Add sesame oil and sesame seeds and toss.

Tour de Upland
August 14th-15, 2010
30 hours of cycling, beer, music, and camping in Nashville, IN
Born of Upland Brewing Co.'s love of beer, nature, cycling, and music is the first ever Tour de Upland! Participants begin the adventure at Brown County State Park, near Nashville, IN with a choice of four cycling routes, each of different distances (12, 24, 34, and 45 miles) and difficulty levels. Over the course of the day they can complete as many routes as they want for maximum ride of 115 miles. The last leg of the journey is a 9.5 mile ride to Camp Palawopec, where riders will find their camping gear waiting for them.
After setting up camp, participants will have full use of the camp and its facilities: 300 acres for hiking, a private lake for swimming, a ropes course, a frisbee golf course, and a sports court and field. Dinner (including vegetarian options), several styles of Upland beer, and live music are provided at no extra cost.
Upland President Doug Dayhoff notes, "We consulted the great Ascetic monk, Rashtun, who said, 'Hills, heat and humidity are the path to righteousness.' I'll give it a shot, and if that doesn't work, there is always the beer." We are limiting the number of participants to 80 in order to maintain the feel of a lively, but not Woodstocky, campground. We expect it to be an evening filled with great times, great memories, and even better photos for facebook fodder. (Word to the wise: What happens at Camp Upland does not stay at Camp Upland. If you decide to attempt the ropes course in nothing but your holey underwear, fully expect pictures to go viral.) Details and registration information are available at uplandbeer.com. Open spots are limited to 80, so act fast. Visit uplandbeer.com for details and registration information. Sign up by July 31 to get best price!

Eat Local!
Eating local food increases the success of local farmers who often do not ship their food far away for consumption. They are the backbone of our thriving farmer's markets. If they can rely on local dollars for support, they can offer more variety at a more competitive price.
