 Hello from Local First Indiana!

We are excited to announce our member drive this month!  We've been meeting with more and more excited business owners about becoming members and the future of our organization.  There is a lot to be proud of in Bloomington and Monroe County, and we celebrate that with every new local, independent business that makes the commitment to join Local First Indiana.  We have some fun things planned for the coming months, so stay tuned!

Eat Local!radishes
Look for this month's seasonal vegetables at the Farmer's Market:

Asparagus
Spinach
Lettuce
Kale
Various Greens
Mustard Greens
Green onions
Some perennial herbs like thyme
Radishes

 Recipes:

Braised Radishes
This is a good recipe for those of you who may love the color but dislike the bite of a raw radish.
Scrub and trim a bunch of radishes. Keep whole. Sauté in 2-3 Tbs. butter. Add 2 tsp. sugar, and cover with water, broth, or white wine. Add a bit of balsamic or plum vinegar. Cook radishes until soft and sauce is reduced.

Roadworthy Will Not Disappear

logo sustaining Roadworthy
Many of you have heard that Roadworthy Guitar and Amp is possibly closing its doors, but keep in mind that they are still open.  To survive in the tough economy, owner David Baas has plans to downsize to a web-based, home-based business if he can find someone to lease the space he is currently in at 115 N. Walnut.  Longtime employee Rick Nagy will also be working from his home, fixing guitars as well.

Roadworthy has long been a favorite for musicians in Bloomington.  A recent Facebook posting on the subject, made by a loyal customer, showed an outpouring of emotion on the subject, including the reaction, "I just died a little."  The customers love the store as much as the owner, who went out on a limb and decided to go with his gut when he opened the store 19 years ago, after finding success in the testing grounds of his garage.   Baas has a B.A. in Biology and an M.A. in Fresh Water Ecology and Geology, but has been playing guitar since he was 10 years old.  He decided that he would be happier opening a store that catered to musicians like himself, concentrating on selling and fixing new and used guitars, bass guitars, amps, and equipment.  He followed a passion that he shares with many of his die-hard customers and employees, and is the reason that people stop by on their way home from work to check out the inventory or buy strings for upcoming shows.

Meanwhile, Roadworthy will not be going away completely, and hasn't closed its doors yet.  If you need to buy, sell, or repair a guitar, he will still be available for that.  "I will be closing my store on South Walnut Street, but Roadworthy will not disappear.   After the store is closed, I will continue to maintain my web presence (www.roadworthyguitars.com ) and will be available by appointment for buying, selling, trading or guitar repairs. It appears I will continue to work from my home after the store has been closed, at least for the foreseeable future."

Invest in your community!

Owners of locally owned businesses tend not to set up shop in Mexico. When a large business leaves a community, real estate values plummet, holes are created in the tax structure, and schools, roads, libraries, police, and fire departments suffer. A market with a variety of long-term, locally owned independent businesses stabilizes a community.
