Sixth Grade Visits San Onofre Power Plant
On Tuesday, half of the sixth grade class had the opportunity to visit the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant. Students are studying energy sources in science and this trip gave them an opportunity to talk to experts in the field as well as learn some of the practices they use to produce our electricity in a safe way. In addition, students learned about the disaster in Japan and the steps our nuclear plant has taken to prevent a similar type of disaster occurring here in the US. Students were able to observe the control room where workers control the conditions in the plant. They also were able to manipulate a scaled model of the fuel rods and control rods that keep the plant running. Following the tour of the training facility the students enjoyed lunch at a nearby park over-looking the ocean. It was a beautiful day and a great educational experience for our 6th graders! The other half of the class will be touring the plant in late May. |

Cougar Chorus Spring Concert
On Wed, April 13, the Cougar Chorus graced the stage with their beautiful singing. Cougar Chorus is for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who love to sing, and it is directed by our music specialist, Mrs. Zavoral. Students meet twice a week before school to practice in the music studio.
This season, the chorus worked on singing in 2 and 3 part harmony and blending with their sections to sound like one voice. At the concert, they performed a variety of music including a Spring Hymn, a Russian folk song, and the pop song "Soul Sister" by Train. It was clear that the audience loved the performance because they gave the chorus a standing ovation!

Drama Proceeds Benefit UNICEF
Thanks to the supporters of the performing arts, the drama department was able to make a substantial donation to UNICEF for their Tap Project campaign. For every ticket sold to "Grease," $1 was set aside to provide clean water to children in desperate situations around the globe. Thank you to each and every ticketholder for supporting the arts and a wonderful charity. We are happy to extend Fairmont's support of UNICEF through the Trick-or-Treat program, the Tap Project, and the UNICEF Club at the Prep, who hosted an information table at the performances. Our Fairmont theater fans are making a difference - not only on our campus, but worldwide!
