Student Spotlight Allison To
How many kids can say they've played at Carnegie Hall? Not many. But, the Anaheim Hills campus is home to one such talented student. Fourth grader Allison To is an accomplished pianist. She is also a very skilled violinist. Allison has won multiple awards in numerous competitions such as SYMF (Southwestern Youth Music Festival), MTAC (Music Teachers' Association of California) festivals, the Long Beach Mozart Festival, and was awarded Gold Medal at the 2010 International Young Musician's Competition. In the same year, Allison gave her debut performance at Carnegie Hall in New York. Her favorite subject is math and she enjoys shopping, drawing, and playing with her best friend Suma, her Maltese dog. She currently studies piano under the direction of Ariel Yang at Opus119, the school of music's prestigious Conservatory Program.

Fifth Grade "Walk Through the American Revolution"
Yesterday the 5th grade students had the opportunity to participate in an interactive presentation of the American Revolution. Our presenter guided us through the many important historical events surrounding this poignant part of our nation's history. The students were assigned different historical figures to portray and many of them dressed up as their assigned character and were truly able to understand the critical decisions that took place during the founding of our nation. All of the students were divided into teams and engaged in a friendly competition to earn the most points for their team. Our "Walk Through the American Revolution" was a wonderful way to study and learn about our history all while having a great time!!

A Salute to the Disneyland Band

What an exciting concert for all the 2nd graders at The American Band!! The Disneyland's Resort and the Philharmonic Socie ty of Orange County had invited us for the "Disneyland Salutes the American Band" concert on Friday, January 28, 2011. During this special 45 minute presentation, we experienced the music of the world-famous Disneyland Band. The band featured some of the top professional performers in the world. The spirit of the music, and the lovely images that it invoked, took us all back to another era - a more peaceful period in our American history. The concert began here and then brought us forward in time to modern day, to celebrate the American Band though the magic of its music. The concert program introduced to the 2nd graders, the band instrument families such as the brass family, woodwind family, and the percussion family. We even had the opportunity to be part of a very large chorus as we sang "It's a Small World" and greeted an exciting surprise guests, Mickey Mouse. Our field trip was overflowing with fun sparked by the children's exuberance and anticipation. What a wonderful learning experience!

Junior High Science Lab 'Physics'!
Speed and how is it measured?
Junior High students learned how to calculate speed with variables of weight and slope. They worked as a group to design experiments with downhill speed using a car and ramp. In each experiment they needed to hypothesize how each variable would affect the speed of the car on the ramp. They recorded their hypothesis, procedure, measurements, and conclusions; and then the experimental variable, distance, time and calculated speed. This lesson really helps students visualize the lessons they have been taught in the lecture section of the science classes.
