Student Spotlight for November - Dylan Smith

Dylan started playing recreational soccer here in Anaheim Hills when he was 5 years old. At the same time he was taking gymnastics classes at KIPS and learning karate. Eventually soccer won out and after 3 years in rec. soccer he moved up to club soccer. He is now in his third year as striker for the Fullerton Rangers, who are currently undefeated.
In 2009 Dylan was invited to try out for the Olympic Development Program (ODP). He trained with their coaches up in Ventura and made the "Boys Under 13 Team." ODP selected him again this year, and he progressed up into the Regional team, now representing the West Coast for the "Boys Under 14 Team." This past August Dylan was invited into the National Pool, and he trained with the US Soccer coaches in Concord, Massachusetts, for a week. Over the Thanksgiving weekend, while we are all enjoying our turkey dinner, Dylan will be playing soccer with the Regional and National teams in Florida.
Here at Fairmont Dylan has played 3 sports: Flag football, Soccer and Basketball on both the DSL and Triway Leagues. In his spare time, Dylan enjoys activities on our ranch in Montana - hiking the Bitterroot trails, mountain biking and horse riding, and in California you can find him air soft shooting, paint balling, and playing games on his x-box. Dylan loves animals, and he plays with our 2 Labrador puppies and 3 cats all the time. As for the future, who knows? He talks about becoming a farmer sometimes, he talks about going into the marines sometimes, and he talks about professional soccer sometimes.
Dylan has been a student at Fairmont for 11 years, and his experiences on this campus, with his teachers, coaches and administrators have played a big part in who he is today. Let's hope whatever high school he goes to can keep up the good work with Dylan.

"Book Report"
The Trumpet of the Swan

Ms. Jarvis chose this book as one of her favorites because she has enjoyed reading it to her grandchildren. It is a heart-warming tale of a young boy that befriends a swan. Although it is a simple story it touches on the celebration of the fact that we all have differences. It is a wonderful book for boys and girls!
Although he lacks a voice in the traditional "Ko-hoh!" sense, trumpeter swan Louis learns to speak to the world with a trumpet stolen from a music store by his father. With the support of an unusual boy named Sam, who helps Louis learn how to read and write, the swan has some rather unswanlike adventures and ultimately wins the love--and the freedom--of a beautiful swan named Serena.
For over 30 years, E.B. White's masterpiece has captured the fancy of countless readers. Now, with stunning new art by award-winning illustrator Fred Marcellino, the beloved story can be experienced anew. The sepia-colored drawings lend an old-fashioned charm to the story--it's almost as if, with their complementary dry wit and uniquely creative talents, White and Marcellino originally worked together. Marcellino received the Caldecott Honor for his illustrations in Charles Perrault's Puss in Boots (Ages 8 to 12).

Junior High Instrumental Concert

The Junior HIgh Instrumental elective class performed for the school this week and it was wonderful to see how well they played! The woodwinds, brass and violins played a varied selection of songs, including "Abbey Road" by the Beatles. They were very accomplished and improve every year!

"OneCause"
5 Seconds Can Earn Our School THOUSANDS!
The Fairmont Parent Association is proud to share an exciting fundraising program. The reason it is so exciting is that YOU can help earn money for our campus by doing nothing more than your normal shopping.
We have partnered with OneCause in an effort to offer an amazingly easy way to raise funds for our school! OneCause has over 900 vendors that contribute a percentage of the total sale for every online purchase you make. The wonderful part is that there are so many vendors that many of us regularly shop. The list is so extensive that it is best to review it at the OneCause site. Here are some stores you probably recognize:
Oriental Trading Barnes & Noble Borders Cost Plus Target Amazon Chico's Crate & Barrel 1-800-PetMeds Dell Ebay Bloomingdales 1-800-Contacts Best Buy Florist.com Hotels.com Nordstrom JCPenney Lancome Finish Line Disney Store PetSmart NutriSystem REI Restaurant.com Pur Minerals Sephora The Great Indoors Toys R Us Verizon Wireless Walmart Wine.com Williams-Sonoma Wet Seal West Elm White House Black Market
Remember, joining OneCause is free and only takes a few minutes. Your friends and family can join as well to help earn money for our school. Simply shop as you normally do online, accessing OneCause.com to link to the vendor you wish to shop. There are no special codes you must enter.
The best part is that you can get started in 3 easy steps!!!
1. Go to www.onecause.com and click "Join" 2. Fill in your profile and find your school by typing in "Fairmont Private", then select your campus. 3. Find your vendor and start shopping!
Your profile will be updated quarterly to reflect any contributions you have earned for us. This is such an easy way to make money for our school that does not require any work on your part other than registering and spreading the word.
So, please join your FPA in enrolling in OneCause and spreading the word to your friends and family. Please contact your FPA Board for more details.
Thank you in advance for your support!
