WHAT'S NEXT?
The inevitable question lingers. After basically two years of planning and executing our Team Lazarus/Le Pingouin entry in the VELUX 5 OCEANS race, we face the reality of completion. It is a sweet feeling of accomplishment finishing the race successfully and reaching every goal we as a team targeted. But it is also a let down in some ways, as the adrenaline of racing solo around the world and the lifestyle of traveling, making new friends and discovering new cultures is exhilarating. Sure we had our ups and downs, but there was never a dull moment. We will keep some of that electricity alive by juggling many activities this summer. This will include sailing aboard Le Pingouin, corporate events, speaking engagements, the push to start writing a book and considering possible competitive sailing races in the future. SUMMER SAILING
Le Pingouin is headed home to Charleston, South Carolina and I am eager to have the bright yellow bird back here in the Lowcountry. Our Yellowbrick tracking device is still onboard, so you can see LP as she comes across the Atlantic. I am thankful to have friends sailing her home as I did need a break from the boat. My muscles are still sore and my joints ache. I am sleeping in fits, but nothing like the sleep deprivation I suffered while racing. LP and I created a strong bond throughout the race and my connection with her is stronger than I have experienced with any other boat. Sailing her is an amazing experience and I will spend several weeks this summer rekindling my bond with her but in a non-racing environment. This will be a time to service our sponsors, new and old, with sailing opportunities, corporate events, dockside receptions and more. We've outlined a rough schedule below to give you an idea of where the boat will be going and the opportunity to get involved. July, 2011 - Charleston events and day sails
- Charleston to Bermuda sail training with guests
- Bermuda events and day sails
- Bermuda to Newport sail training with guests
August, 2011 - Newport to New York sail training with guests
- New York events and day sails
- New York to Boston sail training with guests
- Boston events and day sails
- Newport to Bermuda sail training with guests
September, 2011 - Bermuda events and day sails
- Bermuda to Charleston sail training with guests
Please contact us if you are interested in the sail training opportunities for summer 2011 and beyond. You too can experience the thrill of offshore sailing on one of the fastest boats in the world... but you'll also get a taste of the lifestyle on an extreme Open 60 racing machine. WANT TO FLY LIKE A PENGUIN? Le Pingouin is officially for sale and available for your next adventure. The high tech carbon fiber race boat has proven to be a work horse and outperformed a host of Open 60s of similar age. The boat underwent a complete refit in 2010 and has been meticulously maintained by a professional crew. EDUCATION STATION
The final stretch of the VELUX race offered an opportunity to focus on sustainable issues associated with water. A broad topic we agree, but we did our best to share educational topics and reports from experts in the field with you. If you have not yet visited our Education page at http://www.oceanracing.org/EDUCATION.html, please take a look and consider sharing these topics with friends and family over the summer months ahead. There are some great links for teachers, parents, kids, and everyone interested in the health of our ocean environment. You can also take a look at Tate's travel blog. |
