ssThe New York Landmarks Conservancy's
Sacred Sites Open House Weekend

Saturday, May 19 & Sunday, May 20

St. Michael's Church will be participating in The New York Landmarks Conservancy's Second Annual Sacred Sites Open House weekend.   Designed by architect Robert W. Gibson in 1891, St. Michael's gleaming-white limestone church, with its commanding corner tower, red terra-cotta tile roof and Romanesque-arched windows, is a true landmark on the Amsterdam Avenue skyline.  That being said, St. Michael's Church has been in "landmarks limbo" for 32 years.  Despite the 1980 and 2008 NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission public hearings for the church, it has yet to be approved or denied NYC Landmark status.

The weekend of May 19-20, St. Michael's will open its doors to the community and showcase its spectacular interior and Louis Comfort Tiffany-designed stained glass.

St. Michael's is only one of many New York State sacred sites that will be in the Open House Weekend.  To learn more about the other participants, click here.

Susan Tunick, founder & president of Friends of Terra Cotta and Upper West Sider, will be presented with VSNY's Preservation Advocacy award. Tunick is an established artist who has completed ceramic commissions for the NYC Subway System, the NJ Light Rail, and several New York area schools.  She has written extensively on terra cotta and tile, and her book, Terra-Cotta Skyline, received several awards.  Tunick has also been an incredible resource in preserving buildings with significant terra cotta detailing on the Upper West Side (and beyond!), and advocated for the designation of two now NYC Individual Landmarks: the Metro Theater (Broadway & W. 99th St.) and the Former Horn & Hardart Automat at 104th Street.

After the Awards presentation, members and guests are invited to a catered reception where they can meet the Award recipients.
