Advocacy in Action:
Design Review Committee Speaks Out,
Speaks Up for Landmark Resources

A building or landscape or historic district is landmarked ... then what?  In truth, landmark designation is only the beginning!

Landmarks and historic districts are not frozen in time; they must continue to evolve and to respond to their community's needs.  The challenge, then, to preservation professionals and the responsibility of property owners is to manage this change without compromising the integrity of our landmarks and historic neighborhoods.  As neighbors and stewards of the Upper West Side's built environment, we engage in the public review process to advocate for sensitive and appropriate change.

See for yourself next Monday, August 8th, as LW! appears before the Design Commission to speak out against inappropriate demolition and reconstruction proposed for the Cherry Hill Concourse in Central Park.

WHAT:   Public Hearing of the Design Commission

WHEN:  Monday, August 8th, at approx. 11:05AM

WHERE: 253 Broadway, Fifth Floor (click here for map)

WHY:  To protect our City's first Scenic Landmark, Central Park!
To witness landmarks advocacy in action!

LW! first blogged about the proposal for Cherry Hill in May--revisit our report from the field, as the Landmarks Preservation Commission (the city agency that regulates our city's Individual Landmarks, historic districts and Scenic Landmarks), weighed in on the plan. Their assessment: Cherry Hill is a well-designed much-used site in Central Park in great condition.  There's no need for such invasive reconstruction!

The Landmarks Commission's vote is only advisory in this matter; the final decision will be made by the Design Commission.  Come down on Monday and add your voice to those who are speaking out for our city's historic resources.

In Other Preservation News ...

The Design Commission review of Cherry Hill comes on the heels of this week's much-discussed review by the Landmarks Preservation Commission of a substantial proposal for (simultaneously!) a rooftop addition, a rear yard addition, and the excavation of an entire rear yard at 51 West 83rd StreetHead to the LW! blog now for our post-vote report and for links to press.
