In less than two weeks -- on Tuesday, June 28th -- the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) will hold the second of three public hearings to consider historic district extensions anchored by West End Avenue.

This hearing, for the West End-Collegiate Historic District Extension, will focus on the West End Avenue neighborhood stretching from West 70th to West 79th Streets (see map at right).

Whether you're a resident, business or property owner, neighbor, or general lover of West End Avenue, Riverside Drive, and the rowhouse sidestreets in between, your participation in this upcoming hearing is essential.

Read on to find out how you can show your support, how to access video of past public hearings and forums on this issue, and to learn more about what designation would mean for the neighborhood.

Show Your Support:

Attend the hearing; Inform a neighbor; Write a letter; more

There are a number of ways to show your support for the proposed West End - Collegiate Historic District Extension.  Attending the June 28th public hearing is the #1 most important thing you can do (as Woody Allen said, "80% of success is showing up.").  Whether you plan to make a personal statement, submit written testimony, or simply show your "silent support," being there makes a difference!  In the meantime...

  • Write to your elected official(s).  Thank them for their commitment to this issue and ask for their continued support at the public hearing on June 28th.  Here's how to do it!

  • Sign the petition!  Add your name to the list of those who support any or all of the West End Avenue historic district extensions. And encourage your friends and neighbors to sign as well!  Click here to sign

  • Volunteer for LW!'s pre-hearing telephone campaign!  Just as we did prior to the first of these three public hearings (on March 22, 2011), LW! will look to its dedicated team of volunteers to help us connect with as many residents of the proposed historic district extension as possible.  Whatever time you can volunteer--thirty minutes, an hour, you name it!--your neighborhood needs your help!  Please contact us at (212) 496-8110 or by email to find out more!

  • Recruit your friends and neighbors; spread the word!  in your building and on your block.  Also, print out this informational flyer to post in your building or slip under your neighbors' doors

The Landmarks Preservation Commission fills to the brim at the March 22nd public hearing--the first of
three public hearings to discuss proposed historic district extensions..

A historic district recognizing the architectural richness of West End Avenue and Riverside Drive has long been a landmark "Wish List" priority for LW!  The proposed extensions would weave together five smaller, existing historic districts along WEA and take in eight individual buildings that are on LW's "Wish List" of landmark priorities (including the First Baptist Church at 79th and Broadway and the Cliff Dwelling apartments at Riverside Drive and 96th Street).

The Road Ahead:

Third and final hearing in October

The three new historic district extensions would include nearly 800 buildings (click here for a map of the entire area).  The proposed expansion is being considered at Public Hearing in three parts*:

West End Avenue between 79th and 87th Streets: Held Tuesday, March 22

West End Avenue b/w 70th and 79th Streets: Hearing at the LPC Tues., June 28

West End Avenue b/w 89th and 109th Streets: Hearing at the LPC Tues., Oct. 25

*All three areas are anchored by West End Avenue and extend to Riverside Drive and Broadway in most, but not all, locations.

For specific questions about owning a home or apartment in a historic district and the regulatory process, call LANDMARK WEST! at 212-496-8110.  Our sincerest thanks go to the West End Preservation Society (WEPS) for their stalwart advocacy!
