Cast and Wrought Iron Restoration Symposium Saturday 3/19 and Sunday 3/20 |
Wrought and cast iron have long been among the most versatile building materials available to designers, craftsmen, and builders. Able to provide structural utility and decorative embellishment, iron can mimic delicate filigree or the solidity of a stone column. Though extremely durable, cast and wrought iron, like all historic materials, require sensitive maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and on occasion, replacement.
On 3/19 and 3/20, the Historic Preservation Education Foundation; the Association for Preservation Technology International, Northeast Chapter; Columbia University; and the AIA Historic Resources Committee will present a symposium on the Restoration of Cast and Wrought Iron at Columbia University's Avery Hall. The one-and-a-half day event will feature sessions on the properties and appropriate treatment of historic cast and wrought iron, an evening reception, and walking tour of the Soho Cast Iron Historic District.
