Word from the LPC is that a community meeting about the expanded districts will be held on Wednesday, September 15th, at the Emily Dickinson School/P.S. 75 (735 West End Ave. at 96th Street). Friends at the West End Preservation Society (WEPS) report that the meeting will start at 6PM.
At the meeting (a de rigueur "next step" in moving a proposed landmark or historic district towards a Public Hearing at the LPC), Commission staff will talk owners and other interested neighbors through the designation process, explain its regulatory role, and answer questions from the public.
If you're a property owner in this area,
or just want to know how you can become further involved, please call LW! at (212) 496-8110 or contact WEPS.

September 15th Public Hearing on Riverside Center: Next door to the IRT Powerhouse Landmark-in-Waiting
|
It's been more than a year since the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) held a public hearing (the third since 1979!) to consider finally giving the former IRT Powerhouse the official landmark protection it deserves.
Meanwhile, public review of developer Extell's plans to develop the large site immediately north of the Powerhouse is moving forward. Whatever happens, the new development will have a tremendous effect on the future of this de-facto landmark and the surrounding neighborhood.
Don't miss this opportunity to make your voice heard!
On Wednesday, September 15th (exact hour TBA; during business hours, should not conflict with above West End Ave. meeting), the City Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed "Riverside Center" development -- the last undeveloped parcel of the vast Riverside South project that stretches along the Upper West Side waterfront, from 59th to 72nd Street. The hearing location is 22 Reade Street (near City Hall).
This past July, Community Board 7 (CB7) issued a comprehensive report recommending important improvement to the project. Recently, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer "conditionally disapproved" Extell's application to modify special permits (originally approved in 1992) to build a set of 5 new towers (approx. 3 million gross square feet) between West 59th and 61st Streets, West End Avenue to Riverside Boulevard/West Side Highway.
Please also take this moment to reiterate your support for designating the Powerhouse as a New York City Landmark. The LPC needs to hear from you!
