The Future of the Former IRT Powerhouse |
It's been nearly a year since the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing (the third since 1979!) to consider finally giving the former IRT Powerhouse the official landmark protection it deserves. Meanwhile, plans are moving forward to redevelop the large site immediately north of the Powerhouse. Whatever happens, the new development will have a tremendous effect on the future of this de-facto landmark and the surrounding neighborhood. Don't miss this opportunity to make your voice heard!
Community Board 7 has announced dates for important public hearings about the proposed "Riverside Center" development - the last undeveloped parcel of the vast Riverside South project that stretches along the Upper West Side waterfront from 59th to
72nd Street. An information session will take place this Thursday,
June 3, starting at 6:30 PM at the American Bible Society (1865 Broadway
@ West 61st Street). Come learn more about developer Extell's application to modify previous special permits to build a set of 5 new towers (approx. 3 million gross square feet) between West 59th and 61st Streets, West End Avenue to Riverside Boulevard/West Side Highway.
Please also take this moment to reiterate your support for designating the Powerhouse as a New York City Landmark. The Landmarks Preservation Commission needs to hear from you!
RIVERSIDE CENTER PUBLIC HEARINGS
On May 24, the City Planning Commission certified an application for the "Riverside Center," a proposed 8-acre development between West 59th and 61st Streets and West End Avenue and Riverside Boulevard. In the first phase of public review, Community Board 7 has 60 days to hold hearings and make recommendations. For additional information about this project, please visit CB7's website:
