West-Park Presbyterian Church:
City Planning Commission
Vote Scheduled

First, on January 12, 2010, after 20 years of community advocacy, the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) voted unanimously in favor of designating West-Park Presbyterian Church an official NYC Individual Landmark.

Next, on Wednesday, March 10, the City Planning Commission will take its vote, bringing West-Park one step closer to the last and final step on the road to landmarking: a public hearing before the City Council (date to be determined).

Their support can foster cooperation and generate solutions!  Use the "Forward email" link at the end of this email and send it on to your family, friends and neighbors.  With your help to inform others, the community's voice at the City Council will be loud and clear: affirm the LPC designation and make West-Park Presbyterian Church a full-fledged NYC Individual Landmark!

Tremendous thanks to City Council Member Gale Brewer!  Council Member Brewer, whose district includes West-Park, strongly supports the landmark designation.  Her leadership has been crucial in achieving LPC action for the church.  She needs all of our support to secure City Council approval of West-Park's landmark status.  Please write, call or email Council Member Brewer to thank her and let her know you're behind her 100% (contact info below!).

**IMPORTANT**  For letters and emails, please send a blind-carbon copy (bcc) to [email protected], and we'll make sure copies get to each and every City Council member (51 in total).

In addition to Council Member Gale Brewer, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn needs to hear from you, too!
She is an integral part of the City Council's role in the designation process.
Here, a sample letter that you can use as-is or, better yet, customize to capture your personal viewpoint.

The full City Council will vote to affirm the LPC's designation of West-Park, so please make sure to write, email or call your own local Council Member as well.  Find your local City Council Member's contact information here, then please use the sample letter above to show your support.  A short-and-sweet note is all it takes!  Again, please send a blind-carbon copy (bcc) to LW! and we'll make sure copies get to all 51 members of the City Council.

**Read Council Member Brewer's letter of support for West-Park's designation -- along with those of Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, State Senator Eric Schneiderman, Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal, and State Senator Bill Perkins -- on the West-Park webpage.

Preserving Morningside Heights

The Committee to Preserve the Morningside Brownstones needs your help!

Neighbors of 408-412 West 115th Street have galvanized to save these historic row houses (pictured at right circa 1940) from demolition.
 Facebook
While 408-412 West 115th Street, designed by architect John Brandt and
constructed in 1898, lie outside of LW's usual geographical purview (59th to 110th Street, Central Park to Riverside Park), they are found inside the boundaries of the proposed Morningside Heights Historic District.  As strong supporters of a historic district celebrating this uptown neighborhood, referred to in its late-19th-century infancy as "the Acropolis of the new world," LW! asks you to add your name to the growing roster of those who are urging the Landmarks Preservation Commission to schedule a public hearing to consider the proposed Morningside Heights Historic District.

Sing the petition here!

The impending destruction of these three brownstone structures is symptomatic of the current shocking lack of protection of this deserving neighborhood.

The loss of 408-412 West 115th Street would be, as Assemblymember Daniel J. O'Donnell has said, "a glaring example of the Landmark Preservation Commission's inaction."  To protect these row houses and the many other landmark-worthy buildings in the proposed Morningside Heights Historic District, we must act now!
