West-Park Presbyterian Church: City Council Vote Coming Soon
|

On January 12, 2010, after 20 years of community advocacy, West-Park Presbyterian Church became an official NYC Individual Landmark, unanimously approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC). However, the Presbytery of New York continues to fight efforts to preserve the 125-year-old church.
West-Park needs your help to survive one final push to the end of the landmarks process. Soon, the New York City Council will vote to approve (or, if the Presbytery has its way, deny) West-Park's landmark status. Let's finish the job so that the real work of restoring the church can begin. |

How can YOU take action?
|
Contact your elected officials!
Tremendous thanks to City Council Member Gale Brewer! Council Member Brewer, whose district includes West-Park, strongly supports the landmark designation. Her leadership has been crucial in achieving LPC action for the church. She needs all of our support to secure Council approval of West-Park's landmark status. Please write, call or email Council Member Brewer to thank her and let her know you're behind her 100% (contact info below!).
**IMPORTANT** For letters and emails, please send a blind-carbon copy (bcc) to landmarkwest@landmarkwest.org, and we'll make sure copies get to each and every City Council member [51 in total]).
In addition to Council Member Gale Brewer, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn needs to hear from you, too! She is an integral part of the City Council's role in the designation process.

The full City Council will vote to affirm the LPC's designation of West-Park, so please make sure to write, email or call your own local Council Member as well. Find your local City Council Member's contact information here, then please use the sample letter above to share your concern. Again, please send a blind-carbon copy (bcc) to LW! and we'll make sure copies get to all 51 members of the City Council.

Spread the news far and wide!
Use the link at the end of this email and it on to your family, friends and neighbors. With your help to inform others, the community's voice at the City Council will be loud and clear: affirm the LPC designation and make West-Park Presbyterian Church a full-fledged NYC Individual Landmark!

St. Agnes Library: Restoration of a landmark
|

Join City Council Member Gale Brewer for the reopening of the St. Agnes Branch Library
on Thursday, February 11, from 11AM to 4PM. Located at 444 Amsterdam
Avenue near West 81st Street, this historic branch of the New York Public Library
system (designed in 1905 by architects Babb Cook & Willard) was designated a New York
City Landmark in 1990 as part of the Upper West Side/Central Park West Historic District.
Council Member Brewer's remarks truly capture the joy the completion of this project will give so many:
"Few things will brighten up midwinter, and the hearts and minds of West Siders, more than the reopening of the St. Agnes Library. This glorious restoration and modernization of our beloved library is a testament to the vision and hard work of the staff, architect, and contractors who have given us a renewed landmark and state-of-the-art facility. I am delighted to have played a part by allocating tax dollars to St. Agnes, and now I can join the million of patrons who can return to and use their favorite library!"
In addition to Council Member Brewer, generous financial support from City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, other elected officials, and private funders, makes ready the library, according to Library President Paul LeClerc, "to serve a new generation of users who will use [the St. Agnes library] to pursue their passions and quests for knowledge."
To celebrate this tremendous achievement, the NYPL is hosting a
day of free public events at the St. Agnes Library including a morning ceremony, programs for children
and teens, a neighborhood history talk, job workshop, branch tours and
more.
For more information, visit the NYPL website or read the reopening celebration press release.
