Greetings!
Here is an update on the Capital Campaign project. To date we have had 62 Pershing families contribute with an average contribution of a little less than $68. The total amount collected is $4,201. We still have a long way to reach our total financial goal of $6,000. Reaching that goal would equal the contributions from last year, and would allow PTSA to accomplish the many projects, teacher's requests, and student sponsored events that are on schedule for this school year. You may still send in a Capital Campaign donation. To make things easy, please take a few minutes and send a donation in with your yearbook purchase. These checks MUST be separate. If this is not convenient, you may simply mail your check to the school office with the envelope marked 'PTSA Capital Campaign'! There is only a limited amount of time to donate in order to take the tax deduction for your donation during 2010, so please don't delay and miss that opportunity! Thanks for your support! This is a great school with great families and I know we can reach our goal! Julie Barker Capital Campaign Chair

PRIDE STORE INFORMATION
Pershing Middle School's Teens in Philanthropy Club is partnering with Campbell Elementary to start a "Pride Store". As you may know, a couple of years ago Disney Elementary School partnered with Weller Elementary, a Title 1 school, to start a Pride Store. Because of the success of that project, we are excited to open another Pride Store at Campbell Elementary. Campbell is also a Title 1 school with 98% of the students on the free and reduced lunch program.
The students at Campbell will be able to earn Behavior Bucks and the store will be open twice a month for them to spend those bucks at the store. But this won't be possible without your support. We are looking for donations to stock the store with such items as gently used clothing and shoes, new socks and underwear, toiletries, books, games, toys and gift items. So, please clean out your closets and donate to this worthy cause. There is a labeled bin located in Ms. Ryan's room for your donations.
The Campbell Pride Store's grand opening is set for Tuesday, December 7th. We want to kick this off in a big way, so please clean out your closets or look for bargains while shopping. These kids need our help. Any questions, you can contact Heather Robbins at 343-0203.

PERSHING MIDDLE SCHOOL DAY AT BARNES & NOBLE
The Barnes & Noble Book Fair will be held Friday, December 10th, from 9am-11pm. A percentage of all your Barnes & Noble purchases made that day with a voucher will benefit Pershing Middle School 's library. A voucher will be sent home with your student the week of the book fair, or you may download a copy off Pershing's website. All Barnes & Noble purchases, excluding gift cards, are eligible that day. This even includes the e-reader, The Nook! So make your holiday purchases and we will also gift wrap the item! We wrap the gifts for donations only and Pershing gets to keep 100% of what we make from the gift wrapping booth! Come to Barnes & Noble on December 10th and help out our library!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Pershing Families,
Thank you for an awesome first quarter. Our students, staff, and parents have worked extra hard to get the 2010-2011 school year off to a great start. The end of the first quarter was marked by Parent-Teacher conference week. It was great to see so many of you here for Parent-Teacher conferences. Thank you to our PTSA for providing delicious snacks to our teachers as they worked many long hours during conference week. The treats made the long evenings much more enjoyable. Second quarter began on October 25 and will end January 13, 2011. Please be sure and monitor your student's grades online using our Home Access system. If you have not picked up your password from the office they are still available. Most teachers maintain a classroom web page. This is a great way for you to assist your student in keeping up with daily work and class projects. There is a lot of very valuable information on our web page and I encourage you to utilize this communication tool frequently.
We have wrapped up our fall sports season. Our boys' football teams and girls' basketball teams as well as the Pershing soccer teams were very successful. I am proud of the way our students represented Pershing Middle School both on and off the playing field. Hats off to our coaches for an excellent job. (Girls' Basketball Coaches: Kevin Baker, Sarah Singer, Christina Brown. Football: Shane Peak, Jaymes Wapp, Dan McLachlin, Lee Squibb, Brandon Kliesthermes) Also, our cheerleaders have been outstanding. Thanks for the great job girls and cheerleading sponsor, Amanda Walker. Our music department held their first concerts of the year. Mrs. Johnston's orchestra students and Ms. Sauer's band students provided us with outstanding performances. Also noteworthy is Ms. Ryan and our student council. They have been responsible for many fun events such as our sixth grade mixer and a recent school spirit day. They are working extra hard to create fun Pershing memories for all of our students. New to Pershing this school year is a student newspaper entitled, "The Pershing Bugle". Copies are distributed to the student body weekly. Mr. Apperson has assisted our students in this endeavor and it has been a huge success. It has been a great experience for our young journalists and quite entertaining for our readers.
We are all looking forward to the upcoming Thanksgiving break. Students will be out of school on November 24, 25, and 26. I know I speak for the entire staff when I say that we appreciate the dedication to education seen from our students and parents. The Pershing staff is equally committed to the education of our students. Pershing is an awesome place to be and I consider it a privilege to be the principal here!
Enjoy the break!

VOYAGERS
The Voyagers would like share some useful homework tips from Dr. Jim Fay, of the Love and Logic Institute:
Helping Your Child with Homework
There's no need to battle with your child over homework. Far too many parents feel that it's their job to make their kids do all of their work. As a result, they find themselves in un-winnable power-struggles with their kids. Even sadder, their children begin to see learning as frustrating and a bad thing. Give yourself a break! Listed below are some guidelines for upping the odds that your child will view you as a homework ally...rather than an educational enemy:
- Help only when your child truly wants it.
- Help only as long as you are enjoying the process. As soon as anger and frustration enters the equation, you run the risk of having your child associate learning with these uncomfortable emotions.
- Avoid creating unhealthy dependency. Tell your child, "I'm going to let you work on your own most of the time so that you will know that you can learn even when I am not sitting next to you."
- Help only as long as your child is working harder than you are.
- Remember that it is far better for a child to get a poor homework grade than to believe that it's their parent's responsibility to force them to do their work.

GREEN TEAM
As we celebrate Thanksgiving this month, the Green Team would like to thank you for allowing us to work with such a wonderful group of students this year. Hardly a team meeting goes by without us commenting on what a nice eighth grade class we have. It makes such a difference in teaching when the students are friendly and polite. A special thank you to our PTSA for the delicious meals, snacks, treats, and other various ways you support us.
Green Team students are involved in the following educational endeavors. Ms. Adams's classes are finishing their study of the Revolutionary War and are preparing to move on to the Constitution.
Mr. Apperson is in the process of working on algebraic units in Math as well as inequities with rational numbers. Algebra students are working with various forms of linear equations, slopes, and intercepts.
Mrs. Oelschlaeger's classes are starting an in-depth study of Anne Frank and the Holocaust by reading a play based on Anne Frank's diary.
Mrs. Walker's classes are working on their atom projects that are due November 19th. Check out Mrs. Walker's website for more information.
The Green Team appreciates the parental support we have received this year. If any parents/guardians were unable to schedule conferences and would like to meet, please contact Mrs. Oelschlaeger at 523-2508 or email her at coelschlaeger@spsmail.org.

R.E.A.D.
R.E.A.D. classes are continuing to work on reading and writing! Please make sure your students are completing their five entries and book club assignments for reading weeks.
The sixth graders are beginning a unit on approaching and navigating text during reading weeks. During writing weeks, we will be finishing up a study of the 6 + 1 traits. The seventh graders are continuing a unit on strategies to help them read and understand fiction stories. They are also working on choosing more complex ideas to write about during writing weeks. Eighth graders are continuing to work on their author studies. Please check to be sure your child is working on this project every week.
