From the Principal

Dear Pershing Generals,

What a great first quarter it has been here at school.  I can't say enough wonderful things about the Pershing staff.  Our teachers are focused and dedicated to our students.  Through their planning efforts and hard work, the beginning of the school year has been a tremendous success.  Kudos to Mr. Loveless and his custodial staff.  Many of you were in the building over the summer and know that Larry and his crew had their work cut out for them to get our building ready for students.  The office staff worked diligently with our school counselors to get students enrolled and scheduled.  That is a HUGE task in August.  Our PTSA has organized their entire year of events and has a great leadership team in place.  I am very excited to be a part of this awesome team.

As most of you are aware, Mr. Corn is out on an extended leave.  Mr. Gary Prouty, retired SPS/Glendale High School principal, is filling in as our assistant principal.  We are fortunate to have such an outstanding educator filling in.  Thank you Mr. Prouty and we wish Mr. Corn a speedy recovery!

The end of the first quarter is quickly approaching (Oct. 23) and you will be receiving your child's progress report soon.  Grade reports will be run on Oct. 30th and will be mailed out shortly thereafter.  Parent-teacher conferences will be held during the first week of November. If you have concerns regarding your child's progress please contact one of your child's core teachers (Comm. Arts, Math, Social Studies or Science) to set up a conference.  Students will be out of school all day on Nov. 6.

On November 3, we have the opportunity to approve a no-tax-increase bond that will, among other things, complete air conditioning in all schools across this district. Why should you support this issue?
  • Passage of this bond will fulfill the promise we made to students to air condition all schools.
  • We can take advantage of federal stimulus money to fund air conditioning, construction and improvements and technology that our children need.
  • This will provide quality learning environments for all students across the district.
  • Each bond project will create jobs and a demand for services and supplies thereby stimulating the local economy.
  • The annual amount of taxes we pay will NOT increase as a result of this bond.
  • All schools have received benefits from one or more of the bonds approved since 2000.
Thank you for getting out and voting on Nov. 3!

Finally, I am excited about the launch of our new Pershing web page.  Our goal is to be up and running by the end of October.  Thank you for your patience as we have transitioned to our new software.

It is my privilege to serve the Pershing School Community!

Respectfully,

Dr. Natalie Cauldwell

VOTE - YES - NOVEMBER 3
NO-TAX-INCREASE BOND ISSUE

On November 3rd, Springfield Public Schools will ask voters to approve a No-Tax-Increase bond issue that will leverage federal stimulus money to fund air conditioning, construction & improvements, and technology.

Your YES vote will do the following:

Fulfill a promise

With this bond issue, SPS will satisfy its pledge to air condition every school in the district.  Air conditioning the remaining eight schools will complete the effort initiated a decade ago to achieve equity in the quality of  learning environment available to students in every part of the community.

Maximize resources

Approving this bond issue will save Springfield taxpayers millions of dollars in interest because SPS will be able to access $5 million to $7 million in interest-free bonds available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  These interest-free bonds, along with the district's current bonding capacity and available debt-service funds, enable SPS to request a $50 million bond without having to increase the current tax.

Invest in our community

Quality schools create a quality community.  The proposed bond projects will strengthen our community by upgrading schools in all areas of the district.  This investment in our community will also create employment opportunities and generate demand for raw materials and supplies for local businesses.  As intended by the stimulus package, the majority of the $50 million will be spent locally to employ contractors and laborers and purchase materials and supplies required to complete the proposed projects.

Taking turns for improvement

Every school will have benefited from one or more of the bonds since 2000.

How to help?

Vote YES to approve the No-Tax-Increase bond issue on November 3rd.  Additionally, you can volunteer to make calls to voters the night before the election (November 2nd).  Please call Scott Crise at 886-0245 to volunteer.  Also, complete absentee voting by October 28th.

Scott Crise

TRAVELERS

It's the end of first quarter, and the kids have really started to get the hang of sixth grade life.  We're beginning to see our students taking their first steps for being responsible for themselves, their school things, and organizing their work and time.

On Tuesday, October 27, we will be doing some community work by carving pumpkins for the Dickerson Park Zoo's Halloween Spooktacular.  We are looking forward to seeing our parent volunteers come and gut the pumpkins!  Supplies for carving have already begun coming in, and we sure appreciate that.

In Communication Arts, students have been studying sentence structure as a lead-in to studying parts of speech.  (At this point, your child should be able to spot subjects and predicates from a mile away!) They have also been learning to answer comprehension questions in middle school format and expanding their vocabularies.

In Social Studies, students have been studying prehistory and ancient civilizations.  We would like to welcome our new student teacher, Andrea Otto.

In Math, during the first quarter we have studied number concepts and displaying data (beginning statistics). After the chapter test, we will begin to look at solving equations. We were sorry to say good-bye to Miss Henke, the student teacher who has been with us from the first day of school.

In Science, we are investigating and explaining how matter can be changed physically and chemically. We will identify the physical properties of a substance including volume, mass, density, boiling point and melting point. We will also look at the chemical properties of burning, rotting, rusting, and tarnishing. Students will demonstrate these concepts through a variety of hands-on activities and labs. Quiz and Test dates will be announced in class, as well as any homework assignments. These should be written in your child's assignment book.

VOYAGERS

It's hard to believe it's a new quarter already!  We've enjoyed getting to know each other, and look forward to the many triumphs and challenges the rest of the year may bring.  As we fall into 2nd Quarter, we have just a few reminders for our students and parents:

Thank you for staying on track with your daily assignments!  Parents, we appreciate you checking those student planners at night, and staying connected through STI at home.   Soon you will also be able to check on specific daily assignments and content being covered in class on our new website.  You should be receiving an Alert Now message when our website is up and running.

Band and orchestra students should be bringing their instruments home and practicing every night.  We've been noticing a lot of lonely instruments left in our classrooms at the end of the day!

Thanks again for your donations of hand sanitizer, liquid hand soap, sanitizing wipes, and paper towels to homeroom teachers.  We want to keep those flu bugs out of Pershing and away from our Voyagers!

This year, we will adopt a family to receive a holiday basket from our team.  We will begin collecting items near the middle of November.  We'll send a letter home with specific requests for donations at that time.  Thank you in advance for your generosity for allowing our family to have a wonderful holiday season.

A special thanks to our parent volunteers for joining us on our Incredible Pizza field trip!  This is a favorite field trip of ours!  The students gain a lot from the hands-on experience that the Discovery Center provides.  Thanks for your support!

E-CORPS

We would like to thank all those who attended Open House on Thursday, September 25th.  We enjoyed having the opportunity to meet each of you.

Parents, please don't forget that you can keep informed of your students' assignments by checking their assignment notebook.  Students should be writing their daily assignments down in their planner.  We hope to have the new website up and running soon for you to be able to check for assignments. You can also keep track of student progress through the STI grade book program. If you have not already signed up to access the STI, please stop by the office for information and to sign up.

With the cold and flu season hitting early, we have had many students absent.  Please remind your student to turn in work that was due when they were absent, make up quizzes and tests, and to request the homework that was assigned.  Students should not wait until the day of class to get their work.  As soon as they return, they should collect all the assignments they missed.  Students have been instructed by the team to use Advisory to turn in missing work and ask for the assignments.  For those who do not ride a bus, they can also stop by at the end of the day before they leave.

PRIDE

The teachers of the PRIDE team are excited about the opportunity to work with our new 7th graders.  We are looking forward to a successful school year. It seems like just yesterday everyone was picking up schedules and we were going over those team/classroom syllabuses.  Even though everyone has gone through and read the packet, we thought we'd still pass on a few reminders that you can review with your child.

  • Please check your child's planner daily for any homework assignments. Teachers post an agenda daily that should be copied in the book.
  • Remind your child to check for make up work and the due date immediately upon returning to school from an absence. They also need to turn in any work that was due while they were gone. This is to be done during homeroom, not when they come to class.
  • If your child is absent more than two days, you may call and request assignments to be picked up by the end of the day.  Mrs. Short handles these calls. Please call in requests by 10:00 a.m.
  • Homework assignments and projects need to be completed on time.  Late work will not be accepted.
  • Please check to see that your child has appropriate school supplies daily. Pencil, paper and red checking pens are needed in all classes. Folders/binders and textbooks also need to accompany them to class.
  • Locker times are before school, before 3rd block and after school.
  • Rest room and drinks need to be taken care of before class and at lunch.  EMERGENCIES only during class.

Parents need to make sure they are signed up through the office for access to the STI grading system.  This will enable you to periodically check your child's grades in each class.  Please be aware that a zero means the score was a zero out of the total points, or the assignment was not turned in. A blank space means the student was excused from the assignment.  Blank spaces are not averaged in with the total possible points.

Thanks to all of you who sent in the tissues, disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer.  With the cold and flu season upon us, we will go through all of it quickly.  Any donations after the first of the year will be greatly appreciated.

PRIDE team teachers were pleased with the large turn out of supportive parents at  Open House in Sept.  We enjoyed having the opportunity to meet each of you and welcome any parental communication throughout the year.  Your support and participation is very beneficial to your child's education.

The PRIDE team would like to recognize the October "Student of the Month".

Garrett Baxley was chosen by the PRIDE team teachers for his outstanding citizenship and strong work ethic.

Special recognition will be given to members of the team throughout the year who have displayed good citizenship and academic performance.  Students displaying good citizenship will be treated to a special luncheon at the end of each semester.  Students will be rewarded for their show of respect, responsibility, positive attitude, attendance and dependability. Honor roll students at the end of  each semester will also be treated to a special activity off campus.  We are hoping that all students will strive for the PRIDE team's "5 Star General Award" given at the end of the year.

The PRIDE team welcomes a new member this year. Mrs. Kirkendall is the new Pride team math teacher. She had the opportunity to do her student teaching with Pershing's 6th grade last year, and she is excited about starting her career at Pershing.

Mr. Carlstrom, Mrs. Short, Mrs. Kirkendall and Ms. Ryan would like you to know what a pleasure it is to work with such wonderful young people daily. We feel very thankful to be working with such a great group of kids and their families this year.  Thanks so much for your support.  WELCOME to the PRIDE team.

GREEN TEAM

The Green Team would like to thank everyone for the smooth start to what we trust is a very productive year.  Many thanks to those relatives of our students who were able to attend Open House.  We certainly enjoyed meeting all of you.

Ms. Adams continues to be very involved with the cheerleaders, ball games, and Student Council while her classes are busy studying the Revolutionary War.  Mr. Apperson is working with rational numbers in math and the Algebra students are learning about functions and formulas. Math and Algebra students can, if eligible, attend Math Counts in Mrs. Dorris' room before school.  Mrs. Oelschlaeger's classes are finishing a unit on O. Henry and starting a unit on Edgar Allan Poe. Mrs. Walker's classes are focusing on the basics of science and will begin working in labs with measurement tools.  She encourages her students to stay organized and keep their science assignments to study for the tests.

The main focus for us on the Green Team is the individual student.  Please help us make this the best educational year of your child's life.  We'd like to remind parents that conference time is approaching.  Please contact Mr. Apperson at 523-2510 or eaapperson@spsmail.org if you would like to come in and visit during Conference Week at the beginning of November.

SCREAMING EAGLES

American History - Mr. Baker
The Screaming Eagles have made the transition from their study of the English colonies to the fighting of the American Revolution. During this unit, the Eagles will learn about the cause-and-effect relationships between the events that led to the Revolution. They will also write an extended essay, as part of their Chapter 6 Test, detailing the events of the first 24 hours of the American Revolution. As they continue their study of the war, the Eagles will participate in an in-depth look at the Declaration of Independence. Finally, the Eagles will be involved in a group portfolio project regarding protest and the Revolution.

Communication Arts - Mrs. Brown
Screaming Eagles will analyze literature selections and apply that knowledge to become more effective writers. The past few weeks, students have been learning about the brain's multiple intelligences. Through this study the students have been identifying their areas of strengths and areas that need more time to develop. We have also been learning about the different literature genres and identifying the elements of stories that help us to understand those types of literature. Students will be reviewing the steps and traits of good writing, parts of speech, and rules for capitalization and punctuation. The first formal writing will be a personal narrative about an event in the student's life, followed by descriptive paragraphs and poetry writing.

Strategic Reading - Mrs. Brown
This is a semester class that all eighth grade students will be taking sometime during this year. It is designed to help all readers, whether advanced or struggling, become proficient in tackling all kinds of text material. We began this year by analyzing the areas of reading that interest us most and have made the most impact on the students' lives. After identifying interest areas, we went to the library and searched for a book that met one of the interest areas. Students are expected to have a free reading book for each Strategic Reading class. We will visit the library during class every other week. Exploring the different types of reading strategies will also be a priority for this class. We will be practicing how to use the strategies in order to help with the comprehension of all types of text.

Science - Mr. Davis
Students began the year with the process of inquiry in scientific research and a study of the properties of matter. Safety procedures in laboratory activities are reviewed and carefully monitored. Students will use labs to reinforce the textbook learning and hopefully develop the habit to "observe and analyze."

  Life Skills - Mr. Davis
Students will learn about The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, using a book by author Sean Covey. This is an excellent source of ideas and suggestions for improving their relationships with just about everybody. It's a great class!

Mathematics - Mrs. Dorris
Algebra students have reviewed pre-algebra skills, properties and operations involving real numbers, and are finishing up Chapter 3 in their textbooks solving equations of all kinds. They are beginning an intensive study of graphing and writing linear equations. Eighth Grade Math students have reviewed basic pre-algebra skills and operations on integers and rational numbers. They are beginning a unit on solving equations, in which they will be required to show the thought processes they used to solve equations. Integrated Math students study a variety of skills, designed to help them in their regular math class.

Both Algebra and Eighth Grade Math classes have assignment sheets for each unit, so students will know what they are missing if they are absent on a particular day. The assignment sheet also shows homework assignments. Students may possibly begin homework in class, but they will always have an assignment to complete at home, contrary to the reports some parents have heard! The second quarter project will be a portfolio project, showcasing some of their work from the first semester and reflecting on their learning.

Team News
The majority of Screaming Eagles students are off to a good start this year. We appreciate the support of parents as we prepare students to transition to high school. We welcome calls or e-mails from parents inquiring about their child's progress. If you would like to schedule a conference with our team at any time, please call Mr. Davis, Team Leader, at 523-2507. Our conference time is from 1:30 to 2:30 each day. Thank you, parents, for sending us your finest!

R.E.A.D.

R.E.A.D. classes are off to a great start! We have started our reading and writing workshops, so please make sure your students are completing their five entries and book club assignments.
The sixth graders are working on establishing routines for reader's workshop and the 6 + 1 traits. The seventh and eighth graders are learning strategies to help them read and understand fiction stories. They are also working on elaborating their ideas during writing weeks.
Parent-Teacher Conference week is November 2-6. If you are interested in signing up for a conference during that time, please contact me.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE

The fourth annual Pershing PTSA Capital Campaign is underway now!  Our goal is $9,000 to fund all of the activities and projects of PTSA.  Additional funds raised will help with updates to the classrooms per Dr. Cauldwell, the teachers, and the staff.  One example is purchasing dry erase boards for the classrooms that still have chalk boards.  We are nearly one-third of the way to our goal--please help us reach our goal if you can.  Gifts of every size are so appreciated. Donations can be sent to Pershing Middle School, Attn:  Capital Campaign, or can be dropped off in the office.  Thanks so much for your support!

Tail Gate Thank You!!

Thank you so much to Michelle and Ken Cook for providing and preparing all of the food for the Pershing Football Tail Gate party held on Thursday, Oct. 15, before the football game.  The Cooks thought of everything--even a huge jug of hand sanitizer!  For $3, the participants got a freshly grilled hotdog, chips, a cookie, and a can of soda.  Thanks also to Dr. Cauldwell for planning and supervising this fun event, and to Jack Cauldwell for helping with it, too.   Lisa Hallam and Martha Crise did facepainting and other parents stopped by to show their support.  There were probably 70-80 kids in attendance, and they all had a great time.  The event raised $204 for our Capital Campaign!!!!!
