A little bit of this and that...
Welcome to Spring

The rains are abating (but hopefully not completely because we need to nourish our 'aina and farmlands) and spring has arrived.  Along with the arrival of spring, we hope to have a full plate of activities and events in spring and summer.

2012 is also the biennial year where Slow Food International hosts Terra Madre.   Applications to be a delegate are due April 1 (please see the article in this newsletter for more information). Slow Food O'ahu will assist in the financial sponsorship of one or more persons to attend as delegates.

Please check out our updated website <www.slowfoodoahu.org> We have created a tab/page with our Events so that you can readily see our current and past events, a tab/page "Slow Press" with an archive of our newsletters, and a tab/page "Merchandise" where you can find our Slow Food O'ahu t-shirts, bag, cards, bumper stickers, and other merchandise.  Mahalo to Wendy Kajiyama Hee for her talent in revising our website.

We hope to see you at one of events soon.

Your Executive Committee.
Slow Food Terra Madre October 25 - 29, 2012 in Torino, Italy
Applications are open and due April 1, 2012

Terra Madre, October 25 - 29, 2012, hosted in Torino, Italy by Slow Food International, is a conference in the global political and economic landscape convened as a "World Meeting of Food Communities," to push our thinking in the increasingly interconnected fields of food, agriculture, sustainable development, gastronomy, globalization, and economics.

Terra Madre puts diverse communities across the globe at the forefront of the grassroots battle against industrial food production. In this way, it is similar to the World Social Forum, but rather focused on food and farming. Terra Madre establishes a space "for those who seek to grow, raise, catch, create, distribute and promote food in ways that respect the environment, defend human dignity and protect the health of consumers" to exchange ideas and solutions. It promotes solidarity between eaters and producers, those from the city and those from the countryside, the global North and the global South. It encourages all of us to be united in an international, diverse movement rooted in many different histories, cultures, and communities. Terra Madre shows the international public that a diversity of people-powered, values-based solutions can pave the way for better food and farming around the world.

Since 2004, Terra Madre has become a biennial conference, inspired an annual global day of action called Terra Madre Day, and grown into an international network of food producers, cooks, educators, students, and activists. Various countries have also hosted their own regional Terra Madre meetings, and last year we saw the first Indigenous Terra Madre conference.

Hawai'i is allocated five (5) delegates statewide.  With chapters statewide, the decision was made to spread the delegates statewide.  Slow Food O'ahu will have one (1) guaranteed delegate and there will be one (1), possibly two (2) at-large delegates, depending upon the response and interest of other chapters in the state.  In prior years, our local chapters received applications and screened them to recommend delegates.  However this year Slow Food USA implemented a few changes and is now requiring ALL applications to go to Slow Food USA.  After receiving the applications, Slow Food USA will send them back to the chapter for review and recommendation.

If you are selected, Slow Food International will provide housing and Slow Food O'ahu will assist in subsidizing a major portion of your travel (airline) costs to Torino.  Slow Food O'ahu will also consider subsidizing additional participants that are not selected as delegates, but wish to attend as participant observers.  Slow Food O'ahu is giving high priority to farmers and producers, particularly taro farmers.

If you are interested in being a sponsored delegate, then you must apply BY THE DEADLINE OF APRIL 1, 2012.  Go to Slow Food USA's website for more details and application form.

Liliko'i Butter-Making Workshop
Saturday, March 24, 2012  1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Kahala private home

Would you like to learn to make Liliko'i (Passionfruit) Butter (also called curd)?  We have a few spaces left for this workshop announced in our last newsletter with one correction: the location of the private home where the workshop will take place is Kahala, not Hawai'i Kai.

Liliko'i (Passion Fruit), Passiflora Edulis, is a vine species of the passion flower, known for it very strong and flavorful taste. Passion fruit is not widely available in stores, so most of the fruit comes from backyard gardens or wild groves. It can be found, however, in farmers' markets throughout the islands.  In Hawaii, the varieties are called yellow liliko'i and purple liliko'i and the fruit is normally eaten raw. We usually crack the rind of the passion fruit either with their hands or teeth and suck out the flavourful pulp and seeds.  We often have an abundance of fruit from family, neighbors, and friends.  Here is a chance to learn what to do with the liliko'i pulp.

In this workshop, you will learn how to prepare liliko'i butter from scratch using local liliko'i fruit pulp and all organic ingredients.  We have already done the hard part for you ... picking and storing the fruit.  Join us at a private home to learn the rest of the process.  Participants will actively help with the butter-making and will receive a jar of liliko'i butter to take home at the end of the session.
