A little bit of this and that...
Aloha to 2011 and Welcome to 2012

As the year comes to an end, we at Slow Food O'ahu reflect on the array of events and activities that we have been able to offer, from supporting events that feature local products from chocolate to kalo, tours of our farms, and visits to our restaurants that support local food.  We're pleased with the year's offerings and look forward to more events in 2012, including partnering with others in the community in the advocacy arena on policies that impact food sustainability (see article below on the Forces for Good Symposium).  Sustainability is not just about having 'enough' to eat, nor is it about ensuring that we have an option for good, clean, and fair food available.  It is about making good, clean, and fair food THE preferred choice that guides our agricultural policies and our food-related decisions in the marketplace.

Please help us to make 2012 even better.  You can start by coming to our annual meeting (see article below) or by sending us your comments by email to slowfoodoahu@yahoo.com.  We're open to new ideas - and volunteers.  We look forward to serving you better in the next year.

Order a CSA Holiday Box and Support Slow Food O'ahu

Kula Fields is very pleased to announce that in December, $5 of every O'ahu Holiday Gift Box sold and New Annual Member Sign Up will go to benefit the efforts of Slow Food O'ahu.

Kula Fields Delivery is a farmer's market on wheels. If you get as excited about delicious local produce, you will not be disappointed in their service. They spend a significant amount of time fostering fruitful relationships with a diverse range of farmers & artisans to bring you the best of the islands, while supporting the awesome people that grow it & furthering our community's economy. Kula Fields was created by owner, Roxanne Tiffin, a busy mom of 3 beautiful children, who couldn't bear to take all of her kids to the store for groceries without losing her sanity.  She found that the local Farmer's Market's times & locations were too infrequent or far to go for local produce.  Sensing that she wasn't the only one with struggles like these, Kula Fields delivery service was born.  Prior to starting Kula Fields, Roxanne worked as Buyer for Mana Health Foods for 3 years & she holds a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine.  An avid member of Slow Food Maui, she enjoys cooking & sharing good food with family and friends.

Slow Food O'ahu Annual Meeting and Potluck - Reserve the Date
January 15, 2012 -  11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Please mark your calendars for our annual Slow Food O'ahu Annual Meeting and Potluck on January 15, 2012.  What will be on the menu for 2012? Let's brainstorm together and start the year on a positive note. We can choose from cooking classes taught by the creative cooks among us, legislative advocacy, school garden tours, lectures, films, themed potlucks, cookbook exchanges, farm tours and harvest celebrations...the calendar is yours to invent.

And of course, we'll enjoy slow food and drink in a convivial atmosphere.  Our potlucks feature the best food in town.

If Good, Clean, and Fair Food is important to you, come to the Annual Meeting. Your participation is vital to continue and expand the work of the chapter. Share your ideas and talents! While our individual efforts as consumers and advocates are important, only by working together can Slow Food hope to create change in the food system.

Our business meeting will be held from 11:00 a.m. - Noon at the Waldorf School in Aina Haina.  The potluck will follow from Noon - 2:00 p.m.  For reservations please contact Michelle at sfo.reservation@gmail.com.

Our comprehensive program includes panels focused on clean energy, food self-sufficiency, and smart growth development. A panel discussion will focus on FOOD SUSTAINABILITY.

Slow Food O'ahu hopes to work more closely with The Sierra Club as the Legislature convenes to discuss key health issues (i.e., sugar sweetened beverages) and agricultural policies (i.e., conversion of farm land for development).  If you are interested in helping Slow Food O'ahu, please let us know and consider attending the Symposium.

Registration starts at noon.  The formal program begins at 1:00 pm.  Panels end at 5:00 pm. Never lobbied before? Don't know about how bills are passed? Consider showing up a bit early and participate in an optional legislative 101 session starting at 12:15.  The cost for the Symposium is $25.  A Sierra Club Hawaii Fundraiser dinner catered by Downtown Restaurant will be held in the evening at 6:00 p.m. (separate cost).

For registration information and more details on the agenda contact the Sierra Club Hawaii website at http://www.sierraclubhawaii.com/forgood.php
