Grab your family and friends and join Slow Food O'ahu as we help Kako'o 'Oiwi with their Kalo Restoration Project! Kako'o 'Oiwi is a non-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen the community through the perpetuation of Hawaiian culture and practice. Their current project, Mahuahua 'Ai o Hoi, or "Re-planting the fruit of Hoi," is a community-driven project to restore nearly 400 acres of currently fallow land into a working agricultural landscape. Through this project, Kāko'o 'Ōiwi is creating hands-on cultural, educational, economic and scientific research opportunities for the benefit of the local community. We will be working to reinstate lo'i kalo (wetland taro) that was historically prevalent throughout the He'eia wetland.

This event will take place on Saturday, August 13 from 8:30 a.m to 12:00 p.m. at the He'eia wetland on the Windward side. Please RSVP to Michelle by Friday, August 12 at sfo.reservation@gmail.com so that we know an approximate number of people. Please include in your RSVP your name, member status, and phone or email. This event is free and will include a tour of the facility and a small lunch with a tuna sandwich and/or hot dog with chips, but you may also bring your own lunch if you prefer.

Fresh- The Movie at Coffee Talk Care
Friday, August 19  7:00 p.m.

You are invied to watch FRESH, THE MOVIE on Friday, August 19 at 7 p.m. at Coffee Talk (3601 Waialae Ave., Kaimuki).  FREE, sponsored by Transition Oahu.  Invite your friends!  FRESH celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet.  Among several main characters, FRESH features urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur's 2008 Genius Award; sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollan's book, The Omnivore's Dilemma; and supermarket owner, David Ball, challenging our Wal-Mart dominated economy.

A little bit of this and that...

- SAVE THE DATE...  Saturday, September 17 for a tour of Mari's Garden in Mililani, a talk on hydroponics, and a home grown lunch.  Cost $40 for members, $50 for non-members.  More details to follow.

- SAVE THE DATES... September 23 - 25 for Cinema Italiano.  Slow Food O'ahu will be sponsoring several Italian food films, including shorts, at the festival.  The program is currently in development.  More details to follow.

- The July 2011 edition of National Geographic Magazine has an excellent feature story on The Food Ark highlighting the efforts to preserve our food seeds from extinction.  The article describes the looming crisis: To feed our growing population, we'll need to double food production. Yet crop yields aren't increasing fast enough, and climate change and new diseases threaten the limited varieties we've come to depend on for food. Luckily we still have the seeds and breeds to ensure our future food supply-but we must take steps to save them. This article features the Svalbard Seed Vault in Norway and other efforts to capture the seeds of our past for our food future.

- Food Solutions Nobody's Talking About was the cover story in a recent issue of Honolulu Weekly.  Written by Al Santoro, owner and organic farmer at Poamoho Farms, this "Ag Manifesto" is a bold commentary on the state of the agricultural industry in Hawaii, challenging some of the myths and misconceptions that have prevented us from reaching viable solutions to food production in Hawaii.
