A little bit of this and that...
It summer.....

As summer reaches its peak (especially our very hot weather) and as we approach August, we wish to announce two FREE Slow Food O'ahu events, our picnic and our work day, both described below.  In addition, we  remind you of the Hawaii Food Policy Council Teach-In this week with its two FREE community events noted below.  We hope these no-cost events will encourage you to join us.

Your Executive Committee
Growing Food Under Science-Based Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) & Understanding Food Safety Audits- A Simulation & Discussion

July 27, 2011 CTAHR O'ahu Urban Garden Center 1:45-4:00 p.m.

(955 Kamehameha, Pearl City, Hawaii 96782)

Visit the beautiful grounds of the CTAHR Oahu Urban Garden Center  and learn more about the rules and regulations of third-party Food Safety Audits.  This two-hour simulation will provide attendees with a chance to understand the process of Good Agriculture Practices (GAPs) and Food Safety Audits.  With all of the concerns about food safety audits, CTAHR has agreed to provide an opportunity for people to learn more about the "best practices" and to show how those best practices are measured and monitored  (regardless of the size of the farm, what is grown, or whether or not it is a family-owned business).  GAPs were created to protect consumers and the reputation of Hawaii's agriculture. After the simulation, attendees will have a chance to ask questions about how Food Safety Audits will affect farming in Hawaii.  Remember, this is a garden; you may get dirty, you will be walking around and activitiers will be outside, so please dress appropriately. Be sure to bring water, sun block, a clipboard, pen and paper.

RSVP is required, as space is limited. For more information contact amanda@HawaiiFoodPolicyCouncil.org

A little bit of this and that...

- The Pig and the Lady   is a pop-up project between Slow Food member Martha Cheng and Andrew Le, former sous chef of Mavro. Andrew's inspiration for this menu comes from his passion for Vietnamese culinary traditions that have been passed down in his family.  Allproteins and most produce are sourced locally, and their seafood is sustainable.  The goal of the restaurant is to serve flavors and food not tasted anywhere else in Honolulu. For reservations and the current menu, please visit the   thepigandthelady.com .

- Pounding into an Ancient Rhythm - by Nina Wu - (Star Advertiser 7/17/11) tells the story of Daniel Anthony and his practice of pounding paiai, the pure, pounded starch of taro in its unfermented and undiluted form.  Once you read the article and want to know how to buy paiai, now that Governor Abercrombie has signed into law a bill that will permit the sale of this product, check our Daniel Anthony's website at http://www.manaai.com/
