Please join us for our Annual Meeting and Potluck Lunch on January 30, 2011. This is your opportunity to provide input on the direction of our organization in the new year. We will report on our treasury, our delegation to Terra Madre, membership, and events. We would also appreciate your feedback on events of 2010 and your desires for new events. We are looking towards developing partnerships with merchants and developing a slow directory of restaurants and resources for residents.
Kokua Hawaii Foundation (KHF) will do a short slide presentation on where things are at with the farm to school movement in Hawaii and on Oahu in particular...from the garden front to the school food front and everything in between. KHF is now the Oahu coordinator for the Hawaii School Garden Hui, as well as the statewide coordinator for the National Farm to School Network. As such, the have a handle on what is happening locally and nationally. KHF will have staff members on hand to answer any of our member's questions. KHF is looking for volunteers to get actively involved in supporting its school efforts.
At the Annual Meeting, we will discuss volunteering to make Slow Food O'ahu a more vibrant organization. We are a completely volunteer organization and depend upon your help to make the organization viable. See the article below about volunteers.
A Slow Food event wouldn't be complete without ... food. As always, this will be a potluck. Please let us know your dish when you RSVP. If you would like to share your recipe, please bring e-mail to Michelle when you RSVP.

Gnocchi - Making Class February 6, 2011 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Dirce Carmi, our favorite Slow Food member from Torino, Italy has generously offered to teach a class on gnocchi making. Dirce will teach the traditional method of making gnocchi with potato, eggs and flour. When we're pau with the hands on lesson (limited to 6 people) we will cook up the gnocchi and have lunch together. We will supply a salad of local ingredients, bread and wine to accompany the gnocchi lunch. In addition to the $20 cost for the class, there will be a materials fee (approximately $5). The class is limited to 6 people and will be held in a private home in the Waikiki area. Directions will be provided upon registration. Slow Suppers @ Home in February - Spaces still available
February 18 and 26, 2011
In our last newsletter we announced our Slow Suppers@Home dinners for the month of February. (Please refer to our last newsletter). Two of the meals are full (Feb. 6 and 21), but there are still spaces for two other suppers.
The list of available dinners with remaining slots is listed below
· Friday Feb 18, 6:30 pm, in Pacific Heights, (1 spaces available), Vegetarian meal.
· Saturday, February 26, 6:00 pm, in Waipahu, (4 spaces available), Vegetarian meal.
We hope that as many of you as possible will take the opportunity to join some of your fellow Slow Food members for a celebration of good food, good company, and hospitality.
The person booking guest slots must be a Slow Food members, but the member is welcome to bring along a non-member. Guests will be accepted on a first come basis. Guests will be asked to bring a starter, side dish, or dessert/cheese to the supper. They will have an opportunity to state dietary requirements - a number of our hosts have already indicated that they're happy to cater to certain dietary restrictions if requested ahead of time. The suppers are not just about encouraging local members in different parts of the island to get to know their fellow members but also welcoming Slow Food members from other parts of the world who might happen to be visiting the islands.

Slow Food Beef Order from Moloka'i - 2 Orders Left
In our last newsletter we announced our plans to order another cow from Moloka'i. (see our last newsletter for more details.) There are still slots for 2 more orders... Each order is approximately 1/8 of the cow, 50 - 55 pounds, generally about 50% ground beef, 50% assorted cuts. The cost for 1/8 cow is $300 for active Slow Food members, $350 for nonmembers or inactive members. This includes freight and handling. Job Announcement: Mahi 'Aina Coordinator
The Ho'oulu 'Aina Nature Preserve (www.hoouluaina.org) is currently looking for a Mahi 'Aina Coordinator to oversee and execute community food production activities for "Returning to Our Roots," a three year demonstration project funded by the Kresge Foundation. An 'aina-to-table initiative, the Roots Project aims to improve the health and well-being of Kalihi Valley residents by connecting them more closely to their land, their food system, and their community. The Mahi 'Aina Coordinator will be responsible for the overall development and management of KKV's growing mahi 'aina (community food production) efforts, including strategic planning toward an integrated community food system in Kalihi Valley. The Mahi 'Aina Coordinator will be responsible for hands-on operations, management, and strategic thinking for mahi 'aina related activities, including: organic food crop propagation and harvesting; assurance of food quality and supply; operational planning; staff hiring, training and evaluation; partnership development; training of community members as docents; and project sustainability.
Qualifications: Applicants must demonstrate their capacity for project or enterprise management, as well as for working sensitively and effectively in multi-cultural settings. Experience with organic food production, farming and/or related fields, as well as knowledge of local food and agricultural policy development and advocacy, is required. Experience working with youth is required, along with knowledge and appreciation of Kalihi Valley community and cultures.
