|
Welcome to 2011 Welcome to the first e-newsletter of 2011, our second year of our newsletter. We are looking forward to a good year, starting with our Annual Meeting at the end of this month. We hope to bring you a balance of great food events (culinary, farm support, educational tours) as well as information on food policy issues affecting our community. We're pleased to see some newly proposed Department of Agriculture rules on school nutrition, but there is so much more to do. We welcome you to be a part of our community committed to good, clean, and fair food.

Kokua Hawaii Foundation (KHF) will do a short slide presentation on where things are at with the farm to school movement in Hawaii and on Oahu in particular...from the garden front to the school food front and everything in between. KHF is now the Oahu coordinator for the Hawaii School Garden Hui, as well as the statewide coordinator for the National Farm to School Network. As such, the have a handle on what is happening locally and nationally. KHF will have staff members on hand to answer any of our member's questions. KHF is looking for volunteers to get actively involved in supporting its school efforts.
At the Annual Meeting, we will discuss volunteering to make Slow Food O'ahu a more vibrant organization. We are a completely volunteer organization and depend upon your help to make the organization viable. See the article below about volunteers.
A Slow Food event wouldn't be complete without ... food. As always, this will be a potluck. Please let us know your dish when you RSVP. Please RSVP by January 27, 2011. If you would like to share your recipe, please bring e-mail to Michelle when you RSVP.
There is no charge to attend the annual meeting. However, we need a reservation to ensure appropriate set-up at the restaurant. To RSVP contact Michelle Phillips at sfo.reservation@gmail.com.

The person booking guest slots must be a Slow Food members, but the member is welcome to bring along a non-member. Guests will be accepted on a first come basis. Guests will be asked to bring a starter, side dish, or dessert/cheese to the supper. They will have an opportunity to state dietary requirements - a number of our hosts have already indicated that they're happy to cater to certain dietary restrictions if requested ahead of time. The suppers are not just about encouraging local members in different parts of the island to get to know their fellow members but also welcoming Slow Food members from other parts of the world who might happen to be visiting the islands.

Please provide the following information in your e-mail: · Your name · Guest name, if applicable · Which dates/locations you prefer · Your e-mail address · Contact phone number · About you (please tell us about yourself so that we may pass it on to your host) · Any dietary restrictions (vegetarian, gluten free, etc.) If you'd like to host a supper, it's not too late to sign up. If you have applied to host a supper and haven't received a confirmation, please email David at SFO_Suppers@hotmail.com or call 293-2981 and a host form will be sent to you. We hope to make Slow Suppers @ Home a twice yearly event with the next month of dinners to occur later this summer. |
Volunteers Needed
Slow Food O'ahu is a totally volunteer organization. It is YOUR organization. At the Annual Meeting we will be soliciting input from members as to the direction and events for the future. However, realizing that we are an all volunteer organization, we do need YOUR help to make it successful. In addition to our Executive Committee, we have been fortunate to have members such as David Bangert coordinate our Slow Suppers @ Home program, Gayle Goodman coordinate our Slow Food O'ahu Cooking Club, and Nina Bermudez to manage our e-mail account. We thank them for their efforts. If you are able to contribute in any of the following capacities, please let us know, either by coming to the Annual Meeting or by sending us an e-mail at slowfoodoahu@yahoo.com.
· Coordinate a book club focusing on food-related books. · Provide periodic articles for our newsletter by providing information/links on new books or articles that might be of interest to our readers. · Handle sales of our t-shirts, bags, and cards. · Participate at a Slow Food table at the farmers market, Farm Fair, or other events. · Develop a program of discounts at establishments for Slow Food O'ahu members. · Coordinate our periodic beef sales or other special promotions. · Maintain the Slow Food O'ahu website (www.slowfoodoahu.org) by posting our events and other updates. · Develop the content on our website to acknowledge establishments that serve food that follow slow food principles of good, clean, and fair. · Develop the content on our website to inform people where and how to 'buy local'. · Coordinate our culinary kitchen sale. · Suggest, sponsor, or coordinate any single event for our members. · Any other ideas?????
