Happy holidays to you

We hope you had a slow turkey day with slow food, eating, and good company.   Your holiday schedule may be full holidays, but SFO still has a few December events to participate in, especially Terra Madre Day (see article below).

We also remind you that Slow Food USA has lowered its annual membership rate to $25 (from the prior $60).  So, if you haven't renewed or have let your membership lapse, please consider rejoining at the new rate.  Just go to Slow Food USA's website.  And, for those of you whose membership will expire in 2011, we look forward to having you re-up for another year.  We wish you a happy slow holiday season.   We'll see you in the new year.

Forces for Good Symposium - December 4, 2010
8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Hawaii State Capitol Auditorium

The Sierra Club is sponsoring an event that may be of interest to the Slow Food membership. The symposium "Forces for Good" will be an exciting forum on hot legislative issues and a discussion on how to advocate for issues. The goal of the symposium is twofold: First, to hear from experts about the current state of play and upcoming new initiatives in four key areas:
Clean Energy, Food Self-Sufficiency, Opala and Native Species. Second, after the policy information sessions, there will be a training session on advocacy at which we will discuss the most effective tools for lobbying our elected officials.

The event will end with a tour of the Capitol and a light lunch on the lanai of the Governor's office on the 5th floor and a few words from either Governor-elect Neil Abercrombie or Lieutenant Governor-elect Brian Schatz.

Lunch will be provided. Cost is $5.  Registration & more info: http://www.sierraclubhawaii.com

This is not a Slow Food O'ahu event but may be of interest to our members.
Terra Madre Day - December 12, 2010
Mohala Farm, Waialua  8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

Slow Food O'ahu  will hold a work day in honor of Terra Madre Day, an international Slow Food event on Sunday December 12, 2010.  We will help Mohala Farm, an organic nonprofit farm in Waialua. Please bring your work gloves & clothes, sun protection and water. We will work from 8 a.m. - 10 a.m., then have a mid-morning snack. Car pooling is recommended and we can help line that up if you need kokua. We plan to weed and harvest. There will be an opportunity to buy produce directly from the farm. Our hosts are Mark Hanamoto and Kathy Maddox of Mohala Farm.

Announcing Slow Suppers @ Home in February 2011 - Hosts Needed

During the month of February 2011, we will repeat our successful Slow Suppers @ Home, a series of convivial meals being held in local members' homes to celebrate Slow Food's values of hospitality, home cooking and the sharing of food and friendship.

We invite local members to sign up to host a supper one evening in February. The host sign up period is now open and will close on January 9, 2011. The host registration form may be obtained by emailing [email protected]. Please consider supporting this initiative as we really believe that it's at the heart of what Slow Food means to most of our members and the more suppers we can host the more worthwhile it all becomes.

Guest registrations will be taken as soon as our hosts are lined up in mid January. The guest registration form may be obtained by emailing [email protected]. We hope that as many of you as possible will take the opportunity to join some of your fellow Slow Food members for a celebration of good food, good company and hospitality. Once known, a list of the suppers available with dates and approximate locations will be emailed to all Slow Food O'ahu members or may be obtained by emailing [email protected]. Most suppers have space for six guests. The person booking guest slots must be a Slow Food member, but they're welcome to bring along a non-member. Guests will be accepted on a first come, basis. Guests will be asked to bring a starter, side dish or dessert/cheese to the supper. They will have an opportunity to state dietary requirements - a number of our hosts will indicate if they can cater for certain dietary requirements.

The suppers are not just about encouraging local members in different parts of the island to get to know their fellow members, but also welcoming Slow Food members from other parts of the world who might happen visiting the islands. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected] or phone David at 293 2981.
