Food Policy Council to Be Established - November 16, 2010
Church of the Crossroads 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

On O'ahu we have many individuals, businesses, groups, government agencies, non-profits, and other organizations that are committed to sustainability, food security, community health, and local decision making in Hawaii's food system.  The time is right to create a space in which people with varying views and interests come together, align their visions for the future, and act cooperatively to bring them about.  Through a Food Policy Council, we can all work together to ensure good nutrition for all under all conditions.  Food Policy Councils (FPCs) are being established in many communities both nationally and around the world.  They offer fresh, new approaches and open, meaningful participation, bringing all elements of the community together.  Potential FPC topics include:  The meaning of sustainability; the role of taro/kalo; preparation for emergencies - personal and island wide; household food production/gardening; hunger in Hawaii; the GMO debate; food policy education; obesity and diabetes; local farming and food production.  The initial meeting will be held on November 16 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Church of the Crossroads.  To register or confirm, contact snhawaii@yahoo.com.

Waimanalo Food Systems Council - Organizational Meeting - November 17, 2010
Waimanalo District Park 41  6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Please join the community this Wednesday Nov. 17th at 6:30pm in the Waimanalo District Park's Multipurpose Room (415 Hihimanu St., Waimanalo 96795) as we begin talking about forming a Waimanalo Food Systems Council!

The formation of this Council marks the first step towards improving nutrition in our community, by taking a closer look at the production, distribution, consumption and recycling of fruits and vegetables grown locally in Waimanalo.  The Council will also help initiate or support existing projects that work to improve gardening and agriculture, as well as access to and/or availability of fruits and vegetables (i.e. veggie bus).

Please reply to Elise Davis at elise.davis@doh.hawaii.gov or call 586-4526.

Slow Jam Picking - November 26, 2010
Ka'ala Farms 10:00 a.m. - Noon

Slow Food O'ahu is looking for individuals to pick and clean Java Plum at Ka'ala Farms on Friday, November 26, the day after Thanksgiving, from about 10:00 a.m. to Noon (or until we run out of plums).  A portion of the plums will be used for an upcoming Slow Jam Workshop where we will teach participants how to prepare wonderful, tasty, low-sugar jam with local fruit with universal pectin.  In addition, participants may pick as much extra fruit as they wish for themselves.  If you help pick plums but cannot come to the jam making workshop, we will give you a jar of the jam.

We will limit our group to about 10 people.  Bring a bucket and, if you wish to stay to chat, bring a lunch to share.  Come work off your Thanksgiving meal and avoid the shopping mall.  Please RSVP to sfo.reservation@gmail.com
Slow Food O'ahu Culinary Swap Meet - Volunteers Needed - December 2, 2010
Donations Needed
by November 26, 2010

Slow Food O'ahu is looking for donations of culinary equipment, linens, china, utensils, cookbooks, etc. for its annual Culinary Sale. The sale will be held on December 2, 2010 at Honolulu Weekly's Green Market, from 9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. We are happy to arrange for pickup of any donations--just call Laurie at 261-1172 or Mae at  235-8089 and we'll meet you in a convenient place and time.  We need to have all donations in hand by November 26, 2010 --so clean out your kitchen cabinets now and get ready for the holidays.

Proceeds will be used to support various Slow Food O'ahu projects. We're hoping this year to hire a part time person to help with testimony at the legislature on behalf of food policy issues. Other projects include supporting Terra Madre farmers with their tickets to Italy (Hawaii had over ten delegates this year), supporting Makaha Farm ($1,000 donation this year to replace the hale that was burnt down) and many other worthy efforts.

We are also in need of VOLUNTEERS at the sale.  Please kokua with an hour or two of time on December 2.  If you are able to help staff the culinary swap meet at Fort Street Mall (and first dibs on the items as well) please contact Rike Weiss at rikeweiss@hawaii.rr.com.

Announcing Slow Suppers @ Home in February 2011 - Hosts Needed

During the month of February 2011, we will repeat our successful Slow Suppers @ Home, a series of convivial meals being held in local members' homes to celebrate Slow Food's values of hospitality, home cooking and the sharing of food and friendship.

We invite local members to sign up to host a supper one evening in February. The host sign up period is now open and will close on January 9, 2011. The host registration form may be obtained by emailing SFO_Suppers@hotmail.com. Please consider supporting this initiative as we really believe that it's at the heart of what Slow Food means to most of our members and the more suppers we can host the more worthwhile it all becomes.

Guest registrations will be taken as soon as our hosts are lined up in mid January. The guest registration form may be obtained by emailing SFO_Suppers@hotmail.com. We hope that as many of you as possible will take the opportunity to join some of your fellow Slow Food members for a celebration of good food, good company and hospitality. Once known, a list of the suppers available with dates and approximate locations will be emailed to all Slow Food O'ahu members or may be obtained by emailing SFO_Suppers@hotmail.com. Most suppers have space for six guests. The person booking guest slots must be a Slow Food member, but they're welcome to bring along a non-member. Guests will be accepted on a first come, basis. Guests will be asked to bring a starter, side dish or dessert/cheese to the supper. They will have an opportunity to state dietary requirements - a number of our hosts will indicate if they can cater for certain dietary requirements.

The suppers are not just about encouraging local members in different parts of the island to get to know their fellow members, but also welcoming Slow Food members from other parts of the world who might happen visiting the islands. If you have any questions, please contact SFO_Suppers@hotmail.com or phone David at 293 2981.
