Cinema Italiano features two Slow Food films: "Terra Madre" and "The Wind Blows Round" Kahala Mall Theaters September 23, 25, and 26 (see times below for individual films) Cinema Italiano in Hawaii 2010 has been fortunate to secure two extremely important full feature SLOW FOOD films this year. The first is "Terra Madre", directed by Ermanno Olmi. The second film is "The Wind That Blows Around" by Giorgio Diritti. These two SLOW FOOD films, the first of which is a documentary are exceptional films and should not be missed. Slow Food O'ahu is a co-sponsor of these two films as part of the series.
Slow Food O'ahu has a limited number of tickets for purchase at $8 for members; $10 for non-members. If you wish to purchase a ticket contact Michelle Philipps at sfo.reservation@gmail.com. Please note that Michelle will return your email after September 10. Otherwise, you may buy tickets at the Kahala Theater.
A description of the films is as follows:
TERRA MADRE Saturday, September 25 at 1:20 p.m. Sunday, September 26 at 11:00 a.m. Director: Ermanno Olmi Italy, 2009, 78 mins.
Terra Madre is the international gathering, held every two years in Turin, Italy, of world-wide food producers united in the Slow Food movement, founded by Carlo Petrini in 1986. Promoting biodiversity, sustainability and economic fairness, Terra Madre (Mother Earth) uses the analogy of planet earth as a mother of limited resources who will not be able to continue feeding her growing brood unless her needs are understood and fulfilled. The 2006 Terra Madre convention opens this highly inspiring documentary, where 4000 producers of food crops from around the world seek to find solutions for an ailing planet. The projects of key participants filmed over the next two years illustrate how, through the responsible production of food, humans can return to the role of caretaker, not exploiter, of Mother Earth. Eye-opening ideas, lyrical scenes of farmland and the spirit of eating (and living) well coalesce into a poetic call to action.
THE WIND BLOWS ROUND (IL VENTO FA IL SUO GIRO) Thursday, September 23 at 1:15pm Saturday, September 25 at 3:00pm Sunday, September 26 at 4:30pm
Director: Giorgio Diritti Italy, 2005, 110 mins.
The remote Alpine village of Chersogna is dying. The few residents left stay in the community only part of the year, as the young leave to cities and the agrarian lifestyle of the region is abandoned in favor of modern convenience. When a young French family arrives with a herd of goats to set up a farm to make chevre cheese, the community is spurred into long-forgotten activity, reviving an old farmhouse for the new family. But soon, the realities of farming begin to cause friction among the neighbors, and conflicts escalate in the once peaceful hills. This gorgeously shot drama is the first to feature the rare Occitan dialect, maintaining a richly textured authenticity throughout. THE WIND BLOWS ROUND won three international film festival awards, was nominated for five David di Donatello awards and was featured in the 2009 Slow Food on Film festival in Bologna.

Slow Food O'ahu Taking Names for Another Moloka'i Beef Order (from Laurie Carlson)
I've just talked with Jack who runs the Moloka'i slaughterhouse. He has access to several cows that were purchased about 3 months ago from Pu'u o Hoku ranch. Although they are not technically organic they are certainly pasture raised and fed. The cost for 1/8 cow, equivalent to one box of steaks and one of ground meat, is $300 for SF members and $350 for nonmembers. Usually these run about 50 - 55 pounds per order. Jack also has quite a few oxtails right now--cost on those would be $3.50 per pound. He also has organ meats at $2.50 per pound. These products are from Molokai raised grass fed beef.
Please send Laurie Carlson an email at laurie@honoluluweekly.com ASAP if you are interested. There are only 4 orders left. The beef will probably arrive in late September. Generally arrival is on a Tuesday afternoon around 3 p.m. and you do need someone to do the pickup for you.

Wellness Educators Offer Farm to Table Cooking Series on North Shore Ranch
Ola Loa Wellness, a
local business specializing in wellness education, announced a new series of
events they are presenting on the North Shore of Oahu. The events, entitled
"Eat Local Every Day! A Farm to Table Cooking Class & Wellness Series," offer
local residents the opportunity to experience shopping for, preparing and
eating locally grown foods. In the process, founders Skya Boudousquie and Traci
Potterf, Ph.D., aim to educate participants in the ways foods affect their
health and how they feel. Luann
Casey and Gary Gunder of the Tin Roof Ranch are hosting the event, which will
also feature food from the vendors of the Hale'iwa Farmers' Market.
Each cooking class presents a three
to four course meal, including dessert. Dishes are made from scratch using whole,
unrefined ingredients sourced from local, organic farmers. In the process, attendees
will learn to shop local, eat local, save money and improve their health. "We
want local residents to experience, from soil to table, how foods and
preparation techniques affect their health and emotions," Potterf noted. "We're
really excited about this series. Participants will get to taste the best food
the island has to offer and invest in life-long health!" said Boudousquie. For more information, visit their web site at
www.OlaLoaWellness.com.
This is a four
part series (with one session already finished at the time of this newsletter). The remaining sessions are September 16th,
October 14th, and November 11th from 6:30 to 9pm with optional farm tours
beginning at 6 p.m. Check the above web site for information and RSVP directly to info@OlaLoaWellness.com.
