Slow Suppers @ Home in July July 10, 25, and 31
We announced our Slow Suppers at Home in July in the last newsletter. Three (3) of our members have opened their homes for our series of suppers as listed below. There are a few slots still available.
July 10 (Saturday) - Kailua, with 8 guests (4 slots available) July 25 (Sunday) - Waikiki, with 5 guests (2 slots available) July 31 (Saturday) - Makiki, vegetarian/fish, with 4 guests (1 slot available)
We hope that as many of you as possible will take the opportunity to join some of your fellow Slow Foodies for a celebration of good food, good company and hospitality. The person booking guest slots must be a Slow Food member, but is welcome to bring along a non-member. The registration form is attached to apply to go to one of the suppers. Guests will be accepted on a first come, basis.
Guests will be asked to bring a starter, side dish or dessert/cheese to the supper. They will have an opportunity to state dietary requirements - a number of our hosts have already indicated that they're happy to cater to certain dietary requirements if requested ahead of time.
The suppers are not just about encouraging local members in different parts of the island to get to know each other, but also to welcome Slow Food members from other parts of the world who might happen visiting the islands. FAQ about the suppers are posted at http://www.slowfoodoahu.org. If you wish to attend one of the suppers or have any questions, please contact SFO_Suppers@hotmail.com or phone David at 293-2981.

Poamoho Organic Farm Tour Saturday, July 10, 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
Please join Slow Food Oahu on a tour of Poamoho Organic Farm, the largest certified organic farm on Oahu, overlooking the North Shore and nestled between Poamoho Gulch and Oahu's highest peak, Mt Ka'ala on Saturday, July 10 from 9 a.m.- 10:30 a.m.. They specialize in tropical fruits such as mango, papaya, lychee, longan, avocado, breadfruit, jackfruit, herbs and many types of citrus. On the farm tour, we'll be learning about the farm, do a walking tour through the orchards, and discuss the term "organic" - what it means, the rules, etc. They'll show us some of the techniques they use for large-scale organic farming, and will follow everything up with a tasting of in-season fruit. They expect to have our mangoes and papaya available for purchase as well as other in-season fruits.
Poamoho Organic produce can be found at Whole Foods and other naturals foods stores around the island; they also supply Alan Wong's restaurants, Turtle Bay restaurants and Land of Organica with fruit and other produce. They are also involved in a number of agricultural organizations and programs in Hawaii, work with UH scientists to conduct organic trials and provide educational and offer experimental opportunities to researchers and students. You can learn more about them at their website at http://poamoho-organic.com/

Slow Food O'ahu in the Community- Recent Activities Slow Food O'ahu has been able to help with several community projects already this year. A national organization Ingredients for Change http://ingredientsforchange.blogspot.com/ called us, interested in finding ways to help low income communities get better food. We put them in touch with John Reppun at the KEY Project in Kahuluu. In June, Key sponsored an educational food event, which included highlighting good local food sources and screening of some segments of the film Food, Inc. Speakers included Gordie Morris, food service manager for Kamehameha Schools and Dr. Terry Shintani, creator of the Waianae diet. Additional efforts will focus on backyard gardening, finding resources like soil amendments and kokua on Oahu. For more information on the Key Project, go to http://www.keyproject.org/keyproject/
In July, Feed the Hunger Foundation will be officially launching their Hawaii efforts to improve food security in our state. Slow Food Oahu has worked closely with founders Patti Chang and Denise Albano to put together a reception to introduce Hawaii folks to this new resource. Chang and Albano are Punahou grads-- local girls who are returning home to create a microfinance operation that will focus on building food security in low income communities. Loans will be available to groups and individuals who are interested in starting food related businesses. For information on this project, see http://www.feed-hunger.com/

We are looking for fruit for our jam making workshop. We would like to find a variety of local fruits that can be made into jam. Please let us know if you have access to mangoes, citrus, passion fruit, guava, surinam cherries, or other locally grown fruit. We would like to harvest in July and August, process and freeze; then put a workshop together in September. Please let us know at slowfoodoahu@yahoo.com.
