Update on Terra Madre
Scheduled for October 21 - 25, 2010

Terra Madre is an international network of food producers, cooks, educators and students from 150 countries who are united by a common goal of global sustainability in food. The "food communities" of Terra Madre come together biennially in Torino, Italy, to share innovative solutions and time-honored traditions for keeping small-scale agriculture and sustainable food production alive and well. The Salone del Gusto - the world's largest artisanal food marketplace - is held concurrently, in part for delegates to gain a deeper sense of how small-scale sustainable producers can market their products effectively. To see the kinds of programs and workshops held at Terra Madre, go to http://www.terramadre.info/

We have received a number of nominations for Terra Madre delegates and will be sorting through them in the next several weeks to determine financial support from Slow Food O'ahu.  An email about nominations directly to Slow Food USA will be coming shortly for self-nominations, including individuals who want to be observers.  If you have already been nominated to Slow Food O'ahu for support, please wait to hear from us.
Food, Inc. (The Movie)
April 21, 2010 at 9:00 p.m.

For those of you who never made it to one of the many screenings of "Food, Inc." or for those of you who just want to see it again... The Oscar-nominated film will be shown on PBS Hawaii on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 9:00 p.m.  From PBS's newsletter... "As recounted in this sweeping, shockingly informative documentary, sick animals, environmental degradation, tainted and unhealthy food and obesity, diabetes and other health issues are only the more obvious problems with a highly mechanized and centralized system that touts efficiency as the supreme value in food production." For more information about the movie, go to http://www.foodincmovie.com/

Watch it in the comfort of your home - with some local food to share with friends... and make sure that the food is local!

Honolulu Fish Auction Tour
Saturday, April 24, 6AM ~ 9AM, $5 members/ $10 nonmembers

We're offering this popular event once again - if you've not done this tour, you've been missing out!  We'll meet at 6 AM to greet the sun and the Honolulu fishing fleet as the boats come rolling in!  Brooks Takenaka and Dr. Kaneko from the United Fishery Agency will be discussing the latest research on mercury content in fish and the history and inner workings of the Honolulu Fish Auction before leading us on a tour of the facilities so that we can see the auction in action (it's pretty amazing if you've never been).  They'll explain the grading of the fish and how to choose the freshest fish there and in your local supermarket.  After absorbing all that information, you can end the event with breakfast on your own (including fish just brought in on the boats) from nearby Nico's at Pier 38 - one of Honolulu's little treasures.

Please RSVP by Wednesday, April 21 to Michelle at sfo.reservation@gmail.com.  Please include in your RSVP your name, member status, phone or email and the name of any nonmember or member guests you would like to bring.  THIS EVENT IS LIMITED TO 20 PEOPLE and tends to fill up fast, so please reply quickly if you know you would like to attend.  The cost for members is $5 and nonmembers is $10 (please note: breakfast is not included in the price) and payment must be received by the date of the event.  Payment information, directions and final details will be sent to all confirmed guests a few days prior to the event.
Waikalua Loko Fishpond Work Day
April 24, 2010  8:00 a.m. - Noon

Waikalua Loko Fishpond will be the site of a community workday that will include lessons on the ancient Hawaiian way of raising fish.  This seven acre fishpond on Kaneohe Bay is a curriculum site for students during the week and the volunteer workdays draw a cross-generational group of volunteers that work hard building walls, cutting mangrove and removing invasive limu.  They have developed curriculum for teachers in grades 3-12.  the curriculum is culture-place-based and meets the Hawaii content and performance standards. Registration is required.  Contact Anrea at 263-8202 or email jepsona001@hawaii.rr.com

At the Annual Meeting a recommendation was made for Slow Food O'ahu to host potluck picnics, perhaps 3 or 4 times per year.  This would be an opportunity to share recipes of local foods as well as an opportunity for community sharing.  We need a venue, however, for a Saturday or Sunday from approximately 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.  The venue should to be under a covered roof (in case of rain) with capacity for about 40 people.  If you have any suggestions, please let us know.

If you have an event or information about a relevant book, article, or film that you wish to announce through our newsletter, please let me know as soon as possible.  Our newsletter priorities for activities are Slow Food sponsored events.  We will, however, disseminate information on activities that are consistent with our mission of promoting good, clean, fair food cultivation, distribution, and eating.  The events should be learning and/or educational in nature.  We welcome cross-sharing of information.  Please send your information to newsletter editor, Francine Wai, at slowfoodoahu@yahoo.com.
