The Atlanta area is prone to late freezing temperatures up until mid- April. The early warm temperatures has several types of trees and shrubs growing out blooms and new leaves early. A late dip into the low 30s can end up killing off new blooms and leaf buds. For shrubs like Hydrangeas that bloom on last season's growth, this could mean no summer blooms for this year. To protect shrubs prone to late freeze damage, when the sun goes down, cover with light-weight plastic, sheets, blankets, or cardboard. When the sun rises the next morning, remove the covering so that the plants do not suffocate or heat up too much during the day.
If frost arrives before you have taken the necessary frost protection steps and the plants experience damage, do not be in a rush to cut off the damaged parts of the plant.
