Hot Summer AnnualsWhen to Plant?

When we have an early patch of warm weather, those who love beautiful landscapes and gardeners of all ages start thinking of planting for the next season.

Here are a few guidelines so your efforts aren't wasted if the weather dips to cold over the next few weeks.

  • NOW - Sod or re-seed Fescue grass
  • NOW - Plant trees and shrubs
  • NOW - Plant and prune roses
  • late MARCH - Divide and move perennials
  • APRIL - Sod Zoysia or Bermuda grass
  • mid APRIL - Plant summer annuals (Avoid the temptation to buy and plant too early when the big box stores first put out summer annuals in March.)
  • mid APRIL - Plant tomatoes or other summer veggies

What to do if a Late Freeze occurs?

Article Subtitle
Plant covering freeze protection
The Atlanta area is prone to late
 freezing temperatures up until mid-
 April.  The early warm temperatures
has several types of trees and shrubs growing out blooms and new leaves early. A late dip into the low 30s can end up killing off new blooms and leaf buds. For shrubs like Hydrangeas that bloom on last season's growth, this could mean no summer blooms for this year.

To protect shrubs prone to late freeze damage, when the sun goes down, cover with light-weight plastic, sheets, blankets, or cardboard. When the sun rises the next morning, remove the covering so that the plants do not suffocate or heat up too much during the day.

If frost arrives before you have taken the necessary frost protection steps and the plants experience damage, do not be in a rush to cut off the damaged parts of the plant. These damaged leaves can work as somewhat of an insulator for further damage, plus when spring comes around the plants will need prIf frost arrives before you have taken the necessary uning again anyway.
