Greetings,
The feel of Fall is definitely here! We are sad to see Summer go, (and yes, Dave and I will miss our kayaking adventures!), but the seasons are what we treasure about New England.
Our feature article and video this month is about the importance of rekeying locks. We know we seem like we are beating a dead horse, but it is so important to your personal and business safety and security!
We will be at the Eastern Connecticut Association of Realtors Technology & Trade Show on Friday, October 5th at Port-N-Starboard at Ocean Beach in New London. If you are a member or affiliate member of ECAR, come see us at the show and enter our raffle! See our prize below...

Security Tips
As busy professionals, if you only take a minute to click on this link to watch this video of a former real estate agent (obviously not of good character!) who had keys to properties he had shown, you will see the importance of changing locks on properties. Please note we are not targeting real estate professionals here...as we all know, not everyone out there (regardless of profession) is honest and trustworthy.
Earlier this month, a purple-gloved, cargo-shorts wearing burglar was caught on camera breaking into an apartment in the East Village. It turns out that burglar Piotr Pasciak, 24, had actually robbed that same apartment twice this summer. How was he able to do that? He still had the key to the apartment, because he had shown it when he worked for a real estate company this past spring. Which just goes to show once again: you should REALLY change the locks anytime you move somewhere new.
Following is our explanation, here at AA Lock & Key, of rekeying in easy-to-understand terminology:
Exactly what is "rekeying" or "repinning" a lock and how is it done?
It is the process of eliminating the possibility of existing keys being able to unlock a lock and is accomplished by changing the pins inside the cylinder. These pins (some people refer to them as tumblers) are different lengths and correspond to the cuts on the key thus allowing the plug to turn in the shell, which unlocks the lock. We remove the lock cylinder from the door, take it apart with the existing key and install new pins to match the cuts on the new key we provide. This can be done as long as the existing hardware is in working order, and it does not usually involve new hardware. If locks are the same brand or the same keyway (a general rule of thumb is if the key fits in the cylinder to the shoulder of the key), we can key them alike so that all the locks on one home or building will operate with the same key. Locks can also be masterkeyed--each lock operates by its own key with a "master" that operates all of them.
