Our Contribution to the Industry
Yankee Security Convention 2010
Successful, well-attended show!
Dave just returned from the Yankee Security Convention in Sturbridge, MA. After a year of work by many dedicated volunteers in the locksmithing industry, the Yankee Security Convention has culminated in 3 days of classes and 2 days of convention. Yankee offered a great time to meet new people in the field and greet old friends. Highlights Dave noted at the show were:
Comments about the show were very positive Class attendance averaged about 55 students per day Over 900 people attended the 2 day trade show, some from as far away as Pennsylvania and Kentucky 90 exhibitors~happy with the turnout of attendees and their interest in the newest products on the market Dave noticed definite tendencies away from mechanical locks and many items showcased around keyless entry, including stand alone, hardwired and wireless
One vendor showcased a product that would allow people to use their Bluetooth from the ir cell phone to operate an access control system. Many vendors were showing tools to make locksmiths more efficient and there were the ever-present show specials, offering discounts on items purchased at the show. Dave purchased a hand held video display to be used on safe openings. This technology will make viewing the interior of the safe through the small holes drilled easier and clearer. Dave has made connections with instructors and already has new ideas for next year's class schedule, which he will work on right away.

DIY Security Tips
We often talk about locks in our newsletter, as that is our line of work. But another very important factor in the security of your building, either being a home or business, are your doors~all exterior doors should be solid core doors with heavy duty deadbolts installed in a sturdy frame with long screws so the door cannot be kicked open.
~Personal Tip~ Never put your name on your mailbox. Anybody can call directory assistance, get your phone number, call your house and find out you are not home, making your house a perfect burglary target.
Do put your house number in big bold numbers on your mailbox or house, so it is easily identifiable in an emergency.

It was July 1989, and after a year, Deb's friend left her position of Bookkeeper/Dispatcher at AA Lock & Key for family reasons. Being that Tom was 5 and Vicky was 1, we decided that we still needed to have someone work for us in the capacity. Dave's sister Mary Jane told us that a friend and neighbor of hers was looking for a job. We called this friend and had her come and meet with us. Her name was Kathy. We had met her and her family at Mary Jane's and already knew her. Kathy had 2 kids who were in middle and high school. She had done home daycare and was looking for a change. We figured it was worth a shot hiring her to see how it would go.

Well, it has been 21 years, and we are very lucky to still have Kathy working with us. There are many days that we don't know what we would do without her. Many of you readers have spoken to Kathy on the phone an d know how pleasant she is. She has become a great friend. She has witnessed our 2 kids growing up and all their trials and tribulations, and we have witnessed her daughter's high school and college graduation, wedding and the joyous birth of Kathy's two grandsons. We also keep up with her son's social life which is pretty busy! After the oldest grandson was born, Kathy approached us about taking Thursdays off so she could help out with the care of her grandson while her daughter worked. She said she would understand if we wanted to find someone who could work all five days. We would have been crazy to not work with Kathy on this. It has worked out great for everyone.
