 Newsletter                 KEY COMMUNICATIONS

May 2010
topWelcome Readers!

In this issue of Key Communications we will talk about quality key control and what "Do Not Duplicate" really means to you and the security of your establishment.

And, it's official~~Dave and Bob are licensed locksmiths!  New legislation has been passed in the State of Connecticut, requiring all locksmiths in the state to be licensed. This is very good news to the industry to help prevent scamming, which is huge in the field of locksmithing.   See the video clip to hear why licensing is so important to you, the consumer. See below...

We do listen to our readers...we have had requests for Do It Yourself (DIY) Tips.  We have started a new section and will try to supply you with hints and tips that you can do yourself to make your home and business more secure.  Read more...

As the top leader in providing quality security solutions in southeastern Connecticut and western Rhode Island, our goal is to provide cutting-edge tips for achieving the highest level of security for your business and home and keep you current with the newest in security tips and trends in the field of locksmithing. flashNewsflash!

DAVE and BOB HAVE BEEN CERTIFIED BY THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER PROTECTION AS REGISTERED LOCKSMITHS.  This registration of locksmiths is a new law instituted in Connecticut and all registered locksmiths must pass criminal history and background checks with the Connecticut State Police Bureau of Identification as well as with the FBI.  In the past anyone (even you!) could hang up a shingle and call themselves a locksmith.  This legislation is long overdue in the industry and will help to give more legitimacy to the field. It is very common for scamming to take place where there is no licensing in place.  Scamming is when a front company listed in the yellow pages sends a locksmith out and overcharges the consumer.  It is also common that these companies are not honest and can actually breach your safety by keeping a copy of your key to return later to steal from the consumer.    Watch this news video clip on locksmithing scams in Florida explaining why such licensing is so important to your safety.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU, THE CONSUMER?  Many clients think that if a key is stamped with "Do Not Duplicate" it makes it safe from being duplicated.  This, in theory, is correct, in that it may stop the key holder from trying to get the key cut.  In fact, there is no legal reason for any key cutter to honor the "Do Not Duplicate" stamp.  Most ethical locksmiths will at least question the key holder.  Some may refuse to cut it, others may have the individual sign a waiver.  There is a sure way to have a key that cannot be duplicated anywhere but at AA Lock & Key~Kaba Peaks keys.

Kaba Peaks is a restricted keyway that is registered to AA Lock & Key.  The keys cannot be duplicated any where else. The system is set up so that the owner designates who can authorize more keys and the quantity of keys is recorded by date in our data base.   So, you know that the key you get back is the exact key you gave out.  There is no way it could have been duplicated by anyone else but us at AA Lock & Key.  We have had great success with this product for many years and highly recommend it for quality key control.

Stay tuned to next month's Key Communications for more tips!

If you often need keys for items outside your home, such as lawn equipment keys, spare car keys, etc., purchase a lock box with a push button combination and mount it on the exterior of an outbuilding, under cover.  This way when you are working outside, you can access the spare keys and save a lot of steps.  Dave and Deb personally have a couple of these lockboxes for car keys, etc., and are in and out of them all the time. Neither one of us has the right key on us for the right vehicle!

Also keep all ladders, building supplies and tools, and garbage cans locked up and out of view, so you don't provide an intruder with the means to break into your home or business.

Business grew, so we purchased a grey Dodge van which Dave outfitted again as his "shop".  Deb and Dave purchased big red vinyl letters and spent a  wintry Saturday at a local car dealership applying them.   Once again, we took every and any job we could get to build our reputation.  We also remodeled a small section of the barn (the present shop) so Dave would have a place to work other than on his knees in the back of the van.  We didn't have official office hours, as Dave was on the road most of the time.  But Deb was here to answer the phones and be at the shop.  We purchased a wireless device to screen the driveway, so we wouldn't miss any customers.  Well, that wasn't worth much, as half the time if someone drove through it quick enough, it wouldn't set off at the house.  Deb ended up glancing out the windows all the time, while Tom played. Oh, the joys of working and parenting at the same time!  (I sometimes secretly envied friends who went "off to work"!  In looking back, I am so glad I had every minute I had with the Tom.)  Everything was going along fine until...See next month...Chapter 5.
