Real Life Story

Attracting My Fears

"What you think about you bring about," even when you try not to.

I borrowed a DVD from a new friend and promised to return it to her at a meeting we were both attending in 2 weeks.  After watching the movie, I decided it would be best to simply put the DVD in my purse right away; that way it would not slip my mind to remember to take it on the right day.  This effectively took it off my to do list.

I value being responsible and thoughtful; if I forgot the video, I would feel bad that I let someone down who trusted me with their property, especially since they said they would need it back quickly to share with others.

So, I carried the video in my purse for almost a week.  Every time I saw the video or felt it in my purse, I thought to myself, "Ah good, I won't need to worry about remembering it Tuesday morning."

On Tuesday, I grabbed my purse on the way out the door as usual.  After the meeting, I met my new friend, and I reached confidently into my purse, only to be horrified that it wasn't there.  I hastily explained that I had carried it around all week in anticipation of returning it and wanted to make sure that I didn't forget.  I was so embarrassed.  This made me look very thoughtless and irresponsible.  I didn't even know where it was.  My friend was very gracious, but I did not feel better.

When I got home that evening, there was the video setting by the door where there is usually "stuff" going to and fro which includes my purse.  It quickly dawned on me how that came to be.

Two days before, my boyfriend couldn't find his keys, my purse was dumped out in the search.  When the contents were returned, the video was inadvertently left out.  Since I was confident the video was in my purse, I did not bother to look carefully through the "stuff" setting by the door when I left.

I hand delivered the video the next evening.

So, in the end, my worst fears came true!  The Law of Attraction works, even when you don't want it to.

The Noisy Mind

A question that continues to come up in our coaching and workshops is how to stop unwanted thoughts.

As soon as a person realizes how powerful their thoughts can be, fear can sometimes set in.  They think, "If my thoughts are creating my reality then all these fearful negative thoughts must be brewing up something terrible!"

Although that can be true, it usually takes a long time for Law of Attraction to manifest something that matches the essence of our thoughts.  This gives us plenty of time to slowly turn those thoughts in a different direction before something unwanted shows up.

Another point that helps us out is that we are seldom focusing 100% of the time on the negative thoughts.  Since Law of Attraction works on the average "airtime" that we give a thought, even if we didn't ever change those negative thoughts, the resulting manifestation would usually be better than we are anticipating.

So, the first step is to simply stop worrying about negative thoughts!  When you find yourself spinning on a thought that doesn't feel good, try to relax and just allow it.  Resisting anything, including thoughts, tends to intensify them.

Next, realize that you can't stop a thought, however, you can slowly change the direction of a stream of thoughts towards something wanted.  Let your feelings be your guide.  If a thought feels better then you're on the right track.

Softening the thought by trying to see all sides of an issue instead of just your side is an effective technique.  Here's an example of the softening technique.

Spinning negative thought pattern:

"My company isn't doing so well right now.  With the current state of the economy, I'm afraid I'm going to lose my job.  I can't afford to be out of work for even a day!"

Softening technique:

"For now at least, I am still employed which gives me some time to consider alternative ways to earn a living should I need to pursue them.

"The latest news indicates that the economy actually is slowly improving.  Maybe my company will make it through OK."

"Maybe I'll start cutting back on what I'm spending now so that I can put a little money aside in case the worst case actually does come true  That way, I'll feel more prepared for any outcome."

"Even if my company fails and I can't get a job right away, I will most likely qualify for unemployment which will help me out until I can find one."

"I have many talents besides what I currently do for a living.  If I lost this job, maybe I'd have more fun and possibly earn even more money doing something different."

Now, you may be thinking, "That's just fooling myself! The danger here is real!"  The only thing that is "real" is that our current reality is always made up of the residual effect of past thoughts.

The sooner we begin to work to intentionally have better feeling thoughts, the sooner we will cause our reality to improve!  It's Law.

Just be easy about it and know that there's no rush.  Anything created by a thought can be changed by a different thought.

Finally, remember the 17 second rule: Holding a good-feeling thought for at least 17 seconds will cause another good-feeling thought to join it.  Do that for just 68 seconds and you will begin to invoke Law of Attraction.

Here's your softening exercise for the week:
  1. Pick a subject that you want to feel better about.

  2. Find some softening thoughts about it.  Use the example above for reference.

  3. Gently focus on those thoughts for at least 68 seconds, twice per day.

  4. Do this exercise for a week and see what happens.  Don't specifically look for changes to happen.  Just allow them to appear.
If you've truly softened your thoughts then Law of Attraction must start bringing you evidence to match your new perspective.  It's magical!
