Greetings From the University of Illinois College of Medicine
I'm Dean Joe Flaherty, and I'm pleased to share with you the first transmission of Illinois Medicine Today, the college's new eNewsletter. Illinois Medicine Today is our newly designed and improved version of the Dean's Communique. We have taken a while since the last message to think about the best way to bring you the latest information about news, activities and events here at the college. We hope this newsletter will help you feel connected with us and strengthen your bond with the college and the University of Illinois Medical Center. The college will welcome alumni back to campus during reunion weekend, Oct. 15 and 16. This year's reunion will celebrate the 50th reunion of the Class of 1959 and also welcome classes in five year increments from 1944 to 1999. If you are a member of one of this year's reunion classes, I hope you will join us.
膂ore Reunion Information
I am pleased to report that as of the end of June, the college has raised more than $177 million during the University of Illinois' Brilliant Futures campaign, well on our way toward reaching our $250 million goal. This support is crucial to us meeting our ongoing needs, particularly scholarship funding to help our students defray the high cost of their education and the renovation of the College of Medicine building to add new areas to enhance the student experience. I look forward to bringing you more information about the College of Medicine in future eNewsletters.
Best wishes from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. |

Repaying Kindness, Removing Obstacles Because he received kindness when he needed it most, Terry Mason, MD '78, was able to overcome poverty and a family medical crisis while attending the College of Medicine and go on to become commissioner of the City of Chicago Department of Public Health.
It's no surprise, then, that Mason believes it's important to give a helping hand to medical students who are having difficulty dealing with the financial and emotional pressures of medical school. He was one of the first supporters of the College of Medicine's African American Alumni Scholarship Fund and has made annual contributions to the fund since 2001. 舞ead More
Erd飉 Prize, Endowment Fund Extend Legacy of Breakthrough Research The advances in medicine that clinicians bring to the patient bedside would not be possible without the bench researchers whose diligent labors pave the way for these advances. Ervin Erd飉, MD, professor emeritus in the UIC department of pharmacology, dedicated himself to this kind of scientific inquiry for more than half a century, to the benefit of the countless individuals who have received treatments made possible by his research.
Now, two funds in the College of Medicine -- one, endowed by Erd飉 and his wife, Sara Rabito Erd飉, MD, Res '90, and the other named in his honor -- will encourage and enable other researchers to pursue scientific inquiries that may lead to further medical breakthroughs.

$20 Million NIH Grant to Transform Clinical Research at UIC by Jeanne Galatzer-Levy The National Institutes of Health has awarded UIC's Center for Clinical and Translational Science a five-year, $20 million grant, the largest in the university's history. Translational research-turning new, basic science knowledge into useful applications for health and medicine -- is "an urgent need and a continuing challenge," says R. Michael Tanner, PhD, UIC provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. "Insights from basic research need much development and further study to create beneficial clinical practices, and the NIH is funding us to accelerate the process." The NIH launched the Clinical Translational Science Award program in 2006 to fund a national consortium of medical research institutions that now includes 39 leading centers in 23 states. When the program is fully implemented, about 60 centers will be connected with an annual budget of $500 million. 舞ead More Among the Best Hospitals in America Best Ophthalmology Hospitals UIMC's Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences department is one of most successful and established programs in the country. So Dr. Pier Giulianotti, 55, has launched a $5 million project to design the OR of the future. On his wish list: imaging displays instead of walls and flexible operating tables that allow patients to be positioned in ways that provide the surgical team with the ideal access. "The old OR model is obsolete," Giulianotti says. "We need to integrate the latest technology." 舞ead More UIC's Robotic Surgery Program Nominated for the 2009 Chicago Innovation Awards
