Interrupted Practice Schedule!
By Jaci Veolz

What do you do in case of an "Interrupted Practice Schedule"? The scenario...Practicing has been going well, and progress is steady.  SUDDENLY "something" happens-illness, schoolwork, vacation, ect. and the practice schedule becomes non-existent.  No one worries too much because the interruption is only temporary- - - right?  THEN as practicing becomes possible again there comes a flurry of tears, anger, frustrations - even out-right temper tantrums to the accompaniment of "I hate piano!" Then parents start wondering- - "Am I forcing my child into something he hates? Should we quit?" ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!  What is happening here is an example of what I call trying to "eat an elephant" all in one gulp.  The parent and student know what should have been done during the ptactice interruption and are trying to make up for it all at once.  Thus we get"overloaded" and the mind and emotions just plain revolt.  SOLUTION:  Don't start from where you think you should be, but from where you are.  Get an honest evaluation of what needs to be done (such as numbering the pieces you should knowfrom 1 to 5, I being really bad and 5 being perfect).  Never pull a guilt trip on the student (Well, you knew this before, why can't you do it now?).  Remember, never attack the person, only the problem.  Once you know where you stand, then start "eating the elephant" (chocolate of course) one bite at a time.  Start with #5 piece and one #1 piece.  Work on these until they are comfortable.  Then take a #3 piece.  Then add a #4 and then maybe another #1 or #2.  DO NOT start with several #1 pieces.  That will discourage even the most stout-hearted student. As you study each piece, if playing hands together is too much, then take hands alone.  If that's too much, then take one phrase.  If that's too much, then take one measure.  Start where the student IS, then praise him for every step.  This is so important and we all forget.  Praise is the parents' and teachers' most valuable tool.  Just remember to praise honestly.  You don't have to make up something to praise - there is always something there (even if it was just that he had his feet well placed - or one note was well played - or one interval was right.)  As students grow and this happens a couple of times, they will come to recognize it and be able to deal with it themselves.  You will have done them a great favor - for the ability to deal with "interruptions" is one we have to live with in today's world.

Would you like a chance to play for Seniors?

Mary Burger from a Brand New Day would love to have musicians come by and play for some of the senior residents there. This state of the art assisted living facility is an excellent place to give the gift of music and maybe brighten someone's day. This can be a great opportunity to play for a very accepting audience.

Many customers feel they might be too old to learn to play music and we say" NO WAY" we have had adults in their 70's learning to play. Music is a great way to enjoy life.
Mary writes for record searchlight and if you can take a moment to read this article>> " It's never too late to learn music"
