Atop a hill in Tuscany just south of Siena sits the picturesque town of Montalcino. Celebrated for its fortress, countless scenic views, stretches of silvery olive orchards and a history that reaches back to the Etruscans, Montalcino is perhaps best known for Brunello -the gifted clone of the Sangiovese grape variety (the Sangiovese Grosso) behind the regional reds that have captured the hearts of those lucky to have a chance to taste them. Montalcino's slopes of sand and limestone set their wines apart from the clay marl just north in Chianti. Nearer the Mediterranean, Montalcino's climate is much drier and hotter than Chianti and the grapes ripen fully and early enough to harvest before the October rains further north -yielding a rich bounty at harvest and wines that show Sangiovese's more powerful side -a facet to which Brunello di Montalcino DOCG has become synonymous. With the exceptional 2004s enjoying a long clement season of even ripening, both free of frost and excessive heat, the Brunello di Montalcino that vintage were marked by a balance and depth rarely seen earning the vintage maximum 5 stars -with an emphasis on long term aging. Brunello was the first wine in Italy to receive the highest status - DOCG (Denominzione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) on the July 1st 1980 and according to the DOCG rules, Brunello di Montalcino cannot go to market for 4 years from harvest with 2 of those years under barrel maturation. Vinea Brunello di Montalcino is made 100% from Brunello Sangiovese and after an extended maceration period where color and flavor are extracted from the skins, the wine is aged in French barriques and Slavonian big oak casks for 12 months in each. Then the wine stays in the bottles until the fifth year after the harvest when the wine can finally go out in the market. By the very nature of its craft which covers so many years of development, this Brunello di Montalcino marries fragrance, flavor and texture until we have this sophisticated wine combining leathery, roasted, tobacco, and tea leaf notes with raspberry and cherry fruit throughout. Rich, intense, and complex, the tannins are supple despite its considerable stature. 2004 as a vintage lent great length and a considerable aging capacity that has just hit its stride and is drinking very nicely -sure to lure you deeper into the whims and whiles of Montalcino -the warm belly of Tuscany! Especially when shopping online using promo code 060211 which grants you $10 off each and every bottle of Vinea's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino you buy; that saves you $60 off every 6-pack... buon divertimento!
