William Fevre
2004 Montmains Premier Cru Chablis
Flattering tales of fine Chablis have inspired imitation the world over and yet no other place can achieve the mineral complexity, tremulous texture and invigorating stature of Chardonnay grown beneath the pale northern sun of France's Chablis Appellation. Here on the right bank of the Serein, Montmains preserves every charm of its southeastern exposure. Kimmeridgian slopes of fossilized seashells, limestone and clay lend an individuality entirely Montmains. Despite its mineral posture, the 2004 is creamy and compelling with a bouquet that evolves over the course of tasting the bottle to its end. Flavors and textures weave pure and focused terroir with citrus rinds, green nuts, and a verve that carries on long after that mouthful has passed. Asked how such an incredible wine could come of a mediocre vintage, Luc Bouchard (of Bouchard Pere & Fils) affirmed that "terroir comes first before the vintage -especially a couple years after the vintage." Remember this. Vintage charts have helped the parvenu wine enthusiast but once a person has some bearings, the world is no longer black and white. Vintages vary but every grower responds differently. Terroir is fast and fixed and imparts immutable character to the wines it bears. If it were not the case all Chablis would be Grand Cru and fetch well north of $100. Instead we have a four tier classification: Petit Chablis, Chablis, Premier Cru Chablis and Grand Cru Chablis. Petit Chablis and Chablis may not have the terrestrial benefits that see them through questionable vintages but the higher echelons possess the sangfroid to stay the course during challenging vintages. William Fevre's 2004 Montmains presents a soaring example of just what prime terroir is capable of and at 25% off, they will not last so seize the day and seize your chance at Premier Cru Chablis at appellation prices. 5 cases remain as of posting; land yours and bring them home. | |
