Map of Cotes de Beaune  Monthelie

On the limestone and clay slopes of the Cotes de Beaune between Volnay and Meursault south of Beaune, lies the village Monthelie. Combining the velvety finesse of Volnay with fragrant, ripe fruit and a mineral quality all its own, Monthelie has caught the eye of many a Burgundy lover -especially those quiet insiders who quickly realized what great values could be had.  Monthelie has been a fostering home to vines for over a thousand years and during this time generations of diligent vintners have discovered which grapes and methods best suit given plots whilst learning how to craft expressive Pinot Noir from the gifted  terroir all their own.

Monthelie blazonWhat a difference a year makes

Given the continental climate of northeast France, Burgundy is vulnerable to the shifting seasons, hot summers and cold winters.  Vintages voice their mutable moods and each wine takes a sense of its year into the bottle.  2007 caused concern until the sun had shone for the last ten weeks of Autumn. 2008 was marked by early rain but growers green harvested, the weather turned warm and bright, and late harvest led to great concentration.  These vintages that started grim finished up with great wines -especially those from the vigilant growers that kept watch the whole year.
Garaudet Monthelie on Artisan VineyardsThe great Jean Garaudet in his last vintage
left us with a lovely Monthelie by which to remember him. Both ripe and charmingly rustic, this wine shows Pinot Noir's affinity to Monthelie and in order to preserve every atom of terroir Monsieur Garaudet neither fined nor filtered the wine leaving us an absolute glimpse into Monthelie in 2006: a Burgundy ripe for the picking.

Berthelemot Monthelie on Artisan Vineyards

Enter Brigitte Berthelemot with an eye to foster great Burgundy and poised to set her own roots.  Taking the reins from Garaudet along with the 40 year old vines that lend so much character to this signature Monthelie, Berthelemot carries on Garaudet's diligent, thorough and uncompromising approach to viticulture. Monthelie is chiefly made in the vineyard. Berthelemot has however invested in a great new winery containing one of the tidiest facilities in the region. In essence, the torch has been passed, Berthelemot is now at the helm of great vineyards with every tool at her disposal and the future is looking bright.
